Ban demanded for Bangladesh from UN Peacekeeping

A coalition of 12 human rights organizations have appealed in a letter to the UN under Secretary General Jean-Pierre Lacroix about the United Nations Department of Peace Operations should ban Bangladesh’s paramilitary Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from its deployment, made public on January 20 through the Human Rights Watch (HRW) website.

It says these organizations have documented widespread abuses by the RAB. Also, UN human rights experts have voiced concerns about allegations that members of the unit engaged in torture, enforced disappearances, and other human rights violations.

Yet, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations has to provide a formal response to that letter which was sent privately over two months ago on November 8, 2021.
