Covid-19, another 20 deaths in Ontario and 12 in Quebec

TORONTO – Twenty deaths: Covid-19 continues to claim victims in Ontario, where today the number of deaths returned to rise dramatically, bringing the total number of victims in the province, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 13,195.

On the other hand, hospitalizations are slightly down: today there were 1,005 patients, compared to 1,082 yesterday and 154 in intensive care against 160 in the previous 24 hours.

Out of 13,542 tests performed today, 1,217 cases of Covid-19 were identified: the positivity rate therefore remains at 8.4%, as on Wednesday. The tests in Ontario – as in the other Canadian provinces – remain limited to the “at risk” groups, so the number of infections recorded day after day represents an insufficient count, but the trend in the positive rate is down as well as the number of active and known cases that goes from 13,049 on Wednesday to 12,498 today.

Since the start of the pandemic, Ontario has recorded 1,298,778 laboratory-confirmed cases and 1,273,085 people have recovered from the disease.

The number of deaths today also in Quebec was high: 12, bringing the total since the beginning of the pandemic, in the French-speaking province, to 15,390.

However, hospitalizations are decreasing, with 29 fewer patients than ordinary wards (where 1,315 people are now hospitalized, after 61 hospitalizations and 90 discharges in the last day) and 2 fewer patients in intensive care (43 hospitalized people).

The province also recorded 705 new coronavirus infections out of a total of 12,234 tests carried out at sites managed by the government and reserved, as in Ontario, only for protected categories. As for the quick do-it-yourself tests carried out by citizens at home and then voluntarily entered into the Quebec government portal, 171 out of 212 swabs entered today were positive. The active and known cases in Quebec are now officially , 62,042, still increasing since today (61,348) according to the trend of the last few weeks.

The number of healthcare workers absent due to Covid-19 decreases: from 4,124 yesterday to 3,998 today.

Since the start of the pandemic, Quebec has recorded a total of 1,063,741 cases and 986,309 people have recovered.
