Covid-19, Ontario now averages 1,000 cases per day

TORONTO – Ontario returns above the thousand new daily cases of Covid-19. Today 1,009 were registered, in addition to 8 deaths which bring the total number in the province, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 10,044. The moving average of daily infections, calculated over seven days, is now 1,007, up sharply from 821 last week – an average that hasn’t been seen for over six months. 38,502 tests processed in the last 24 hours: the positivity rate was 3.3 percent. 

Of the new infections reported Wednesday in Ontario, 421 involve unvaccinated people, 22 partially vaccinated and 64 individuals whose vaccination status is unknown. The remaining 502 infections concern fully vaccinated people. 333 people hospitalized due to Covid-19, 155 of whom are in intensive care: the majority are not vaccinated.

Regarding the distribution of today’s cases, 124 were registered in Toronto, 48 in the Peel region, 50 in the York region, 42 cases in Halton and 34 in the Durham region. Outside of the GTA, regions that have reported more than 30 new infections include Hamilton (50), Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington (69), Middlesex-London (38), Ottawa (92), Waterloo (32), Simcoe-Muskoka (82) and Windsor-Essex (75). All other regions reported fewer than 30 new cases of the virus.

According to the province’s epidemiological report, of the 1,009 new infections reported Wednesday, 208 cases were identified in children under the age of 12, 85 in young people between the ages of 12 and 19, and 308 in people between the ages of 20 and 39. years.

There are currently 8,351 active and known cases in Ontario.

Quebec goes hand in hand with Ontario. Today it recorded 1,367 new cases, the highest number of the fourth wave so far, with the positivity rate at 4%. 2 deaths (the total is 11,596) and more hospitalizations: +7, after 32 people were hospitalized and 25 were discharged. Another person joined those already admitted to intensive care, where there are now 59 patients in all.

There are currently 11,140 active and known cases in Quebec.

Meanwhile, vaccinations continue apace as many parents rush to get their babies first injection. About 30,000 doses were administered today, of which nearly half reserved for children between the ages of 5 and 11: the percentage of partially vaccinated children in this age group is now 32% across the province of Quebec ( for Ontario, data on children’s vaccinations are not yet available). Overall, across the province, the group with the lowest vaccination rate is still that of people aged 18 to 39, although the rate in this group has continued to grow slowly, from 82% to 83% in less than a week.
