Get Ready: Mental Health Week starts today
2021 edition marks the 70th year of the campaign promoted by CMHA
In times of extreme anxiety and isolation, largely due to a Covid-19 pandemic that seems to have no end, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) wants each of us to be aware that “good mental health does not mean feeling happy all the time”.
Thus, continuing the process of education on this theme, the centenary community organization starts today with yet another campaign for Mental Health Week, a Canadian tradition that unites communities, schools, and workplaces in the core objective of celebrating, protecting, and promoting mental health.
And there seems to be no doubt about the importance of this purpose, particularly in an age of unprecedented stress and anxiety. In fact, a recent CMHA/UBC study on the effects of COVID-19 on the mental health of vulnerable populations, found that 40 percent of Canadians have experienced a decline in their mental health since the beginning of the pandemic.
“Many of us are exercising outdoors to deal with the stress, but one in five are using substances like drugs and alcohol to cope”, the study finds.
The theme of this year’s Mental Health Week, according to the CMHA fact sheet, will focus on understanding our emotions, a way to promote emotional literacy that, in short, can be explained as “the ability to recognize how we feel, understand our feelings, label them and express them”.
