Record $105 Million donation to Trillium Health Partners

TORONTO – It is the largest donation to help build the largest hospital in Canadian history. The Trillium Health Partners (THP) announced the $105 Million donation from the Peter Gilgan Foundation in a press release (February 15). The historic donation will help expand and redevelop facilities at two of THP’s three locations, the Mississauga Hospital and the Queensway Health Centre.

Karli Farrow, President and CEO of THP expressed thanks saying, “we are so grateful to Peter Gilgan and the Peter Gilgan Foundation for playing such an instrumental role in supporting our vision and helping to build new infrastructure that creates a more complete, efficient and equitable health system”.

The charitable gift will go towards building the new 22-storey hospital, to replace the 62-year-old Mississauga Hospital located at the Hurontario St. and Queensway site. While advance work is already underway, construction of the state-of-the-art hospital, that will bear the name, “The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital”, is to begin 2025.

The donation will also help expand and redevelop the Queensway Health Centre located on Sherway Drive in Etobicoke. Construction on the nine-story facility is expected to start in 2024 and will be named “The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre”. The expansion will serve as a dedicated center for complex patient care and rehabilitation.

According to THP, these projects will add more than 600 beds across the network. That means a total of nearly 2,000 beds across all three sites, (Mississauga, Queensway and Credit Valley) making THP the largest hospital in Canada.

The hospital network serves a population of 2.2 million people, mainly in the West GTA. More than 1.7 million patients visit THP facilities annually and the demand for services is projected to double in the next twenty years.

The pandemic highlighted the critical need for investments and improvements in healthcare. The THP provided care for more than 4,000 hospitalized Covid-19 patients throughout the pandemic, making it one of the hardest-hit hospital networks in Ontario. That represents about 10% of all Covid hospitalizations in the province.

Peter Gilgan, CEO and Chairman of Mattamy Homes, acknowledges the importance of building and strengthening the community. “As the community has grown and diversified, so have the demands of the hospital”, Gilgan said. “I started my business in this region many years ago, this gift is a way of giving back to the community and to recognize our amazing health care workers for their commitment”, he added.

Gilgan expressed his gratitude for their dedication adding, “I am thrilled to be able to support THP in its much needed mission to transform health care”.
