Globally, there have been over 128 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 according to Johns Hopkins University data. Since the start of the pandemic, over 104 million people have recovered and more than 2.8 million fatalities were attributable to Covid-19.

Covid out of control, today Ford will announce new restrictions

[GTranslate]TORONTO – New restrictions on the way to curb the surge in Covid-19 infections. The Provincial Government of Ontario could today announce the new crackdown, in the face of an epidemiological curve that has returned to run strongly in the last 10 days, with the new daily cases above 2 thousand for a week and with intensive care admissions marking the new record since the beginning of the pandemic. The concerning effects of social media

[GTranslate]Social media has infiltrated almost every aspect of modern life. Worldwide, social media users number about 3.8 billion, roughly 50% of the global population.

It is a means by which people can stay in touch, interact and a way to create and/or exchange information and ideas in a virtual environment. It can be a beneficial tool, especially at a time when medical experts advise keeping physically distanced to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. (graph 1, see above)

School chaos, infection records: 518 in 24 hours

NACI suspends AstraZeneca vaccine for people under 55

Toronto, March 30: Yesterday, Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization, in short, NACI has suspended the vaccination of AstraZeneca because of concerns over safety and advised the provinces, which most of the provinces agreed to follow. The reason for this is the issue of blood clots in the bodies of women in European countries. Although, 300,000 doses of the vaccine have already been administered in Canada and no blood clots have been reported anywhere, not even in the case of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines with mRNA properties. টরন্টো, মার্চ ৩০: গতকাল কানাডার ন্যাশনাল অ্যাডভাইজরি কমিটি অন ইম্যুনাইজেশন, সংক্ষেপে ‘এনএসিআই’ প্রদেশগুলোকে নিরাপদজনিত উদ্বিগ্নতা দেখা দেয়ায় অ্যাস্ট্রাজেনেকার টিকাদান স্থগিত করার সুপারিশ করেছে এবং ফলশ্রুতিতে অধিকাংশ প্রদেশ তা অনুসরণে সম্মত হয়েছে। এতে কারণ হিসেবে ইউরোপের দেশগুলোতে মূলত মহিলাদের দেহে রক্ত জমাট বাঁধার বিষয়কে উল্লেখ করেছে। যদিও ইতিমধ্যে কানাডায় এই টিকার ৩ লাখ ডোজ দেয়া সম্পন্ন হয়েছে এবং কোথাও কোনো রক্ত জমাট বাঁধার ঘটনা ঘটেনি, এমনকী ‘এমআরএনএ’ বৈশিষ্ট্যের ফাইজার ও মর্ডানার টিকার ক্ষেত্রেও তা ঘটেনি। (more…)

EASTER BREAD RECIPE

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons yeast (1 packet)
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 egg beaten plus 1 teaspoon water
  • 3 eggs hard-boiled and dyed
  • sprinkles

 Add butter to milk and heat in a small pot until butter melts thoroughly. Remove from heat and allow to cool. (more…)

Status update of Covid-19 cases worldwide

Globally, there have been over 127 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 according to Johns Hopkins University data. Since the start of the pandemic, over 103 million people have recovered and more than 2.7 million fatalities were attributable to Covid-19.

On Sunday, Poland surpassed Mexico in total number of confirmed positive cases of coronavirus. Yesterday, an additional 29,261 new infections were reported.

The values for Spain were last updated March 26, 2021.

The world’s most environmentally conscious countries

[GTranslate]To be environmentally-friendly or “green”, requires engagement in practices and processes that are sustainable and minimize harmful impacts on the environment. Some countries do it better than others.

According to the 2020 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), formulated by researchers at Yale and Columbia universities, Denmark is rated the “greenest” country in the world. The Nordic nation has the highest EPI score at 82.5. (see graph below) (more…)

Earthquake in the Adriatic Sea,
fear throughout the Italian east coast

[GTranslate]An earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.5 – 5.6, was recorded at 14.47 today, March 27. Following three other tremors recorded by the Ingv (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology), with an epicenter in the open sea, 10 kilometers deep: the second at 15 of magnitude 4.1; the third, of 15.09, of 2.6, and the fourth of 15.12, of 3.4. The earthquake was felt above all in Puglia, Basilicata, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Lazio and the Marche. (more…)

Terremoto nel Mar Adriatico: paura in tutta la costa orientale italiana. La scossa, di magnitudo fra 5.5 e 5.6, è stata registrata alle 14.47 di oggi, 27 marzo. A seguire altre tre scosse registrate dall’Ingv (Istituto nazionale di geofisica e vulcanologia), con epicentro in mare aperto, a 10 chilometri di profondità: la seconda alle 15 di magnitudo 4.1; la terza, delle 15.09, di 2.6, e la quarta delle 15.12, di 3.4. Il terremoto è stato avvertito soprattutto in Puglia, Basilicata, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Lazio e nelle Marche. (more…)

টরন্টো, মার্চ ২৬: গত পরশু অর্থমন্ত্রী পিটার বেথলেনফালভি অন্টারিও প্রদেশের ২০২১ সালের জন্য ১৮৬ বিলিয়ন ডলারের বাজেটটি পেশ করেছেন। সেক্ষেত্রে করোনা মহামারিতে যে অর্থনৈতিক বিপর্যয় ঘটেছে, তাতে আপাতদৃষ্টিতে অন্টারিও বাজেটে ঘাটতি মোচন হতে কমপক্ষে ২০২৯ সালটি গড়িয়ে যাবে। কারণ, গত বছরই প্রদেশে ৫.৭ শতাংশ হারে অর্থনৈতিক সংকোচন ঘটেছে। তবু অর্থমন্ত্রীর কথা, ‘আমি অন্টারিও বাসীকে আশ্বাস দিচ্ছি, আমরা এই মহামারি জয় করবোই, এবং এরপর আমরা আরও সুদৃঢ়তায় ফিরবো।’ কিন্তু উৎকণ্ঠা নানা কারণে থেকেই গেছে। (more…)

টরন্টো, মার্চ ২৬: আজ শুক্রবার বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার সুবর্ণ জয়ন্তী। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই এ দিনটি স্বাধীনতায় বিশ্বাসী বাংলাদেশের প্রতিটি মানুষের হৃদয়ে একটি আবেগ ঘন দিন। একদিকে মহান আত্মত্যাগের স্মৃতি এবং অন্যদিকে দৃপ্ত পদক্ষেপে এগিয়ে যাবার গৌরবোজ্জ্বল অর্জন। সেজন্য এ বছর বাংলাদেশের সরকার তার স্থপতি বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের শততম জন্ম বার্ষিকী পালনের সঙ্গে তা জাকজমকপূর্ণভাবে উদযাপন করতে যাচ্ছে। ১০ দিন ব্যাপি ‘সুবর্ণ জয়ন্তী’ উৎসবে দেশ মেতেছে, যা বঙ্গবন্ধুর জন্মদিনকে ঘিরেও বটে। এ জন্য আঞ্চলিক প্রভাবশালী প্রতিবেশী দেশ চীন ছাড়াও সুদূর কানাডার প্রধানমন্ত্রী জাস্টিন ট্রুডো বিশেষ ভিডিও শুভেচ্ছা বার্তা পাঠিয়েছেন। (more…)

L’AQUILA – Si sarebbe dovuta tenere nella splendida cornice di Assisi lo scorso 21 marzo, nella Giornata mondiale della Poesia, la cerimonia conclusiva del Premio Internazionale di Poesia “L’Essere Armonia” 2020-21, con la consegna dei riconoscimenti ai vincitori, alle Personalità insignite speciali, agli altri premiati. Questa sesta edizione del Premio promosso e organizzato dall’Associazione ALEA ha scontato invece il duro condizionamento della pandemia da Covid 19, dunque con l’impossibilità di celebrare la cerimonia di premiazione in presenza, ma solo comunicando tramite posta elettronica e social network gli esiti del concorso letterario ai vincitori e premiati speciali, rinviando l’evento in presenza quando sperabilmente le condizioni sanitarie lo consentiranno. Toronto, March 23: Today, with World Meteorological Day looming, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has raised the issue of the ocean crisis. Climate change is having an adverse effect on the oceans, that’s for sure. The climate of the ocean is changing rapidly. The warmth of the sea is increasing with the height of the sea level. The wind on the surface of the ocean is becoming terrible. As a result, natural disasters like Tornadoes, cyclones and hurricanes are increasing, those causes loss of life and property. (more…)

টরন্টো, মার্চ ২৩: আজ বিশ্ব আবহাওয়া দিবসকে সামনে রেখে ওয়ার্ল্ড মেটেরোলজিক্যাল অর্গানাইজেশন (ডব্লিউএমও) মহাসাগরের সংকটাপন্ন বিষয়টিই তুলে ধরেছে। মহাসাগরের ওপর জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের বিরূপ প্রভাব পড়ছে, সেটাই প্রতিপাদ্য। এতে দ্রুত বদলাচ্ছে মহাসাগরের আবহাওয়া। সাগরপৃষ্ঠের উচ্চতার সঙ্গে বাড়ছে ¯্রােতের উষ্ণতা। মহাসাগরের উপরিভাগের বাতাস হয়ে উঠছে ভয়ংকর। ফলে ঘূর্ণিঝড়, সাইক্লোন, হারিকেনের মতো প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগ বেশি হচ্ছে। বাড়ছে জানমালের ক্ষয়ক্ষতি। (more…)

Happiness thrives, despite a global pandemic

In the annual World Happiness Report, (published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network on March 19), Finland reclaims top spot among the 95 countries included in the 2021 report. Financial gains for Ontario’s growing “Sunshine List”

[GTranslate]TORONTO – Each year, the Ontario government releases the names and salaries of public sector employees who cross the $100,000 threshold in earnings, otherwise known as the “Sunshine List”. The annual list, released March 19, includes a number of public sector servants (nurses, teachers, police officers, firefighters, etc.) who earn a six-figure salary.

This year’s Sunshine list is bigger than ever. Despite record unemployment levels and full-scale lockdowns prompted by measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19, the past year has been a fruitful one 206,606 public sector employees.
In 2020, the number of names on the list increased by 23% from 166,977 in 2019. (more…)

Ontario’s “Sunshine List”: Public sector salary disclosure

On March 19, Ontario released the annual list of public sector employees who earned more than $100,000 in 2020, otherwise known as the “Sunshine List”.

In a statement following the release of names on the list, the official opposition highlights the fact that seventeen people are among the top income earners, with an annual salary over $700,000. Among the top earners are six executives from Ontario Power Generation.

Ontario expanding vaccine booking

TORONTO – Ontario is racing against time on the vaccination front. The immunization campaign against Covid-19 is now being accelerated again with the opening of reservations to vaccinate even for people who are at least 75 years old: from March 15th the provincial system accepted reservations only for those who were at least 80. In order to get vaccinated, you must connect to the internet portal activated by the provincial government (https://covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine)or by telephone, by calling the toll-free number 1-888-999-6488, where a telephone operator will collect the information necessary to make the reservation. Covid-19 infections are rapidly rising in Ontario schools

Covid-19 infections are rapidly rising in Ontario schools: with the last 132, they have reached 10,882. Peel Region is on alert: there are 10 schools closed due to a virus outbreak. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board shuttered three elementary schools as of Friday: San Lorenzo Ruiz, St. Cornelius and St. John the Baptist elementary. St. Sofia School in Mississauga is among the schools that have been closed for longer. It’s reporting 10 students and five staff members who are ill with Covid-19: one other staff member also needed to go to the hospital due to COVID-19 complications.

Egyptian Embassy celebrates the International Francophonie Day

New Canadian Politics poll; a look at the Conservative Party’s challenge: growing support

Bill C-7 was passed

On March 17, 2021, Bill C-7 was passed, granting Canadians without a reasonably foreseeable death the right to apply for medical assistance in dying (MAID).  This is a modification to the original MAID legislation, for which a majority of Canadians showed support.  Parliamentary and expert reviews will now be conducted to study additional questions, such as advance requests, cases relating to mental illness, the protection of persons with disabilities, the palliative care system, and access to MAID for minors.

Potential shut-down of the Italian Department at Laurentian University

[GTranslate]TORONTO – Amid concerns over rising variant-of-concern (VOC) cases and Ontario possibly in a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the focus shifts to scaling up the vaccination campaign.

So far, Ontario has administered more than 1.2 million doses into the arms of citizens. However, that tally is predicated on the fact that at least two doses are required per person to achieve maximum protection against the virus. (more…)

In Canada AstraZeneca vaccine now recommended for use on seniors

টরন্টো – পিল জনস্বাস্থ্য দপ্তরের চলমান তদন্তের কারণে কানাডার অন্টারিও প্রদেশের ব্রাম্পটনে আমাজনের বৃহৎ প্রকল্পটি বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয়েছে। কারণ, সেখানকার ৫ হাজার কর্মচারির মাঝে কমপক্ষে ৬১৭ জন করোনা আক্রান্ত হয়েছেন। ফলে সেখানকার সব কর্মচারিকে দুই সপ্তাহের স্বেচ্ছা অন্তরীণে যেতে বলা হয়েছে। (more…)

Danger variants, schools towards closure

Ontario to launch COVID-19 vaccine booking portal and call centre Monday

TORONTO – Online bookings for vaccination of over-80s in Ontario are kicking off. Starting at 8 am Monday morning, it will be possible for all people born in the year 1941 or before reserving the appointment for the first and second dose of vaccine by connecting to the provincial portal www.Ontario.ca/bookvaccine or by phone, calling the Provincial Vaccine Information Line at 1-888-999-6488. Already in recent weeks some local public health units – such as that of the York Region, Hamilton and Peel – had begun accepting reservations for the first dose of the vaccine. (more…)

Trouble with the rate of Covid-19 vaccinations

Mexican consul in Leamington, Canada, dismissed for sex tape in his office

The director-general for North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Roberto Velasco Álvarez, announced that Darío Alberto Bernal Acero, honorary consul of Mexico in Leamington, Canada, was dismissed from his position after knowing a sexual video recorded in front of his desk at the consular headquarters. [GTranslate]TORONTO – March 11, 2021: Canada yesterday stood at 898,824 positives for Covid-19, an increase of 2,851 more cases than in the previous 24 hours. The number of victims – nationwide – yesterday reached 22,363 total deaths, 31 more than on Wednesday. In Canada yesterday the number of recovered people from the coronavirus stood at 845,860. Ontario yesterday reached 313,520 overall positives, an increase of 1,092 new cases compared to Wednesday. The total number of victims in Ontario has meanwhile risen to 7,109, with 10 more deaths than the previous day. The number of recovered people in the province rose to 295,128, or 1.110 more than the previous 24 hours. There are 956 cases so far registered in Ontario of the English variant of Covid, 41 of the South African variant and 28 of the Brazilian variant. (more…)

In Ontario 1,316 new infected and 16 deaths

[GTranslate]TORONTO – March 9, 2021: Canada yesterday stood at 895,809 positives for Covid-19, an increase of 3,208 more cases than in the previous 24 hours. The number of victims – nationwide – yesterday reached 22,332 total deaths, 37 more than on Tuesday. In Canada yesterday the number of recovered people from the coronavirus stood at 843,019. Ontario yesterday reached 312,428 overall positives, an increase of 1,316 new cases compared to Tuesday. The total number of victims in Ontario has meanwhile risen to 7,099, with 16 more deaths than the previous day. The number of recovered people in the province rose to 294,018, or 1.212 more than the previous 24 hours. Long Term Care, McGeer: “Proposals ignored because they are expensive”

আমাদের প্রাত্যহিক জীবনের বিষয়াবলী তুলে ধরাই সমাজবিজ্ঞানের কাজ, তবে সেটা খবরের কাগজের সংবাদ কিংবা সাধারণ জ্ঞান বা গাল-গল্প নয়। সেখানে লৌকিকতাবর্জিত বা ভাঁড় গোষ্ঠীর নেতৃত্ব যেমন প্রতিভাত, তেমনি গোড়া রাজনীতিকের কাছে পৃথিবীটা দ্বৈত বিরোধীতা ছাড়া ভিন্ন কিছু নয়, যদিও উদারপন্থীদের কাছে ভিন্নতাটি দৃশ্যমান। আবার তাতে পরিবার ‘ক্ষুদে সমাজ’ হিসেবে বিবেচিত হলেও থাকে আপন রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি, মূল্যবোধ ও সংঘাত প্রশমনের উপায়। সেজন্য সমাজবিজ্ঞান সামাজিক সম্পর্কের তত্ত্বকেই উদ্ভাবণ করে। সে কারণে কানাডায় আইন ভেঙ্গেছেন এমন একজন আইন প্রণেতার পরিণতি এ লেখার প্রতিপাদ্য। (more…)

When Dalton McGuinty was Premier of Ontario, I remember consulting with the Filipino Canadians about a study on installing a casino either in a downtown hotel or on the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) grounds along Lakeshore Avenue.
