Status update of Covid-19 cases worldwide

Here we provide a daily update of the data available for select countries and jurisdictions as of December 13, 2021, at 5:00 pm EST.

On Monday, health officials in Russia logged 29,558 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 10 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases, 87.3% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 1,121 Covid-related deaths for a total of 290,604 fatalities attributable to Covid-19.

Long-Term Care homes, from today the vaccination is mandatory

TORONTO – Time is up. Since today, staff in Ontario’s long-term care homes, if they want to continue working in these facilities, must be fully vaccinated. The original deadline set for workers in the sector among the most affected by Covid-19 has been postponed from November 12 to December 13, said LTC ministry spokeswoman Vanessa De Matteis, following the recommendation of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization. “Omicron and mild symptoms? That’s a myth, it’s very dangerous”

TORONTO – The threat posed by Omicron is frightening. The new variant has created a climate of great concern in the international scientific community, although at the moment there is no unequivocal assessment of this new threat. On the one hand, in fact, we have numerous virologists who have highlighted how the first data coming from South Africa and Europe have highlighted a greater transmissibility of the coronavirus and, at the same time, the presence of generally milder symptoms for the infected compared to the Delta strain and the other variants that have characterized this pandemic. Covid-19: Ontario exceeds 1,500 cases in 24 hours, Quebec over 1,600

TORONTO – Other 1,536 new infections recorded today in Ontario against 1,476 on Sunday and 887 on last Monday. With 38,221 tests processed in the last 24 hours, Ontario therefore achieves a positive rate of 5.5%, up significantly from 3.5% a week ago. The seven-day moving average of new infections has now met 1,328, up from 940 on Monday. (more…)

Catholic trustees: they exist but do they understand why?

Catholic school board trustees have a fiduciary duty to oversee the care of children whose parents entrust them to the publicly funded Catholic education system. It is a challenging job. Catholic ratepayers elect those trustees every four years with the expectation that the publicly elected board members protect, preserve and promote the Catholic education system.

It is their duty under the Law. The very same duty espoused in Catholic values that support faith formation. (more…)
