Status update of Covid-19 cases worldwide

Here we provide a daily update of the data available for select countries and jurisdictions as of December 28, 2021, at 5:00 pm EST.

On Tuesday, health officials in Spain logged 99,671 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 6.0 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases, 83.6% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 114 Covid-related deaths for a total of 89,253 fatalities attributable to Covid-19. (more…)

Fear Omicron in LTC, Ontario taking further action

The new Omicron variant is a risk in long-term care homes. And Ontario is trying to play ahead by putting in place temporary measures that will come into effect starting tomorrow when access to CTCs by general visitors will be suspended while only designated caregivers will be able to continue to enter long-term care homes. The daily absences of all residents for social reasons were also suspended.

No updates on Covid in Alberta from 23 December, but there is the ‘black market’ of data

TORONTO – Canada has officially registered more than two million cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic: 2,058,872, to be exact. And they are probably “few”, given that on the one hand health workers are preparing for a possible post-holiday peak driven by the fast-spreading Omicron variant and on the other hand the numbers of the last few days could represent only the tip of the iceberg given the difficulty in processing all tampons. Ontario: 74,783 active cases, 491 in hospitals

TORONTO – It was a Christmas under siege for Ontario: almost ten thousand new cases of Covid-19 a day, with a positivity rate that has reached 20%. Impressive data, which highlight the very high spread of the virus which, however, does not correspond to an increase in the proportion of hospitalizations: patients obviously increase (with similar numbers the opposite would be impossible), but their number does not reach, at least moment, equally impressive “peaks”. And this should at least comfort, because while the data relating to the tests are not complete (as we will explain in a few lines), there is no escaping those of the hospitalizations: those who are sick end up in hospital.
