Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – John Tory has been re-elected mayor of Toronto: with this third term, if he remains in office for all four years, he will become the longest-serving mayor of Toronto, beating Art Eggleton who spent as mayor of Toronto a total of 11 years, in office since 1980 until his retirement from municipal politics in 1991. [GTranslate]TORONTO – Teachers and students from Laurentian University’s Italian Studies program are on the ropes, since the university declared a state of insolvency on February 10th, citing more than 300 million in debt, they have certainly not slept soundly.
“I do not know exactly how this situation will affect us – said Diana Iuele Colilli, president of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures – we fear that, since it is small, the Italian Studies program may be cut.” (more…)
