Ford allocates $10 million to survey the grounds of 18 Indian residential schools in Ontario

The Ontario government will spend $10 million to examine the soil of eighteen residential schools in Ontario and to preserve and commemorate the remains found. Provincial Premier Doug Ford announced today that the money, which will be spread over three years, will be part of the “indigenous-led” effort to identify, protect and commemorate “the burial sites of Indian residential schools.” (more…)

Kamloops: Another formal apology long overdue

On Sunday, Pope Francis expressed shock and sorrow after “the discovery in Canada of the remains of 215 children, pupils of the Kamloops Indian Residential School in the province of British Columbia”.

During his weekly address to the crowd in Saint Peter’s Square Sunday afternoon, the Pope said he “joins the Canadian Bishops and the whole Catholic Church in Canada in expressing his closeness to the Canadian people who have been traumatized by the shocking news.” (more…)

O lançamento oficial do Mês dos Povos Indígenas nos Museus de História de Toronto, um grupo de 10 museus pertencentes e operados pela cidade de Toronto, teve lugar esta terça-feira (1 de junho).

A celebração online com duração de um mês incluirá guias, um programa de culinária, uma experiência de compra que inclui produtos de artistas e autores indígenas, e apresentações de filmes e dança de artistas emergentes e consagrados.

Toronto History Museums launches new virtual Indigenous Peoples Month Programming

The official launch of Indigenous Peoples Month at Toronto History Museums, a group of 10 museums owned and operated by the City of Toronto, took place this Tuesday (June 1).

The month-long online celebration will include tours, a culinary program, a shop experience that includes products from Indigenous artists and authors, and film and dance performances by emerging and established artists.

The remains of 215 children in a mass grave, Trudeau: “Shameful chapter in the history of Canada”

“A dark and shameful chapter of our country’s history”: this is how Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented, on Twitter, the news of the discovery of the remains of 215 children in a mass grave near the Kamloops Indian Residential School (in the pic above, in 1970) in British Columbia: a institute opened in the late 1800s and closed in 1978, which was part of the network of schools founded by the government and mainly administered by Catholic churches (in the case of Kamloops, the management came under the control of the government in the second half of the 1960s), at the aim to “separate” the children of the indigenous people from their culture to “assimilate” them into the dominant culture. Justin Trudeau issues formal apology to Italian Canadians interned during Second World War

TORONTO – Justin Trudeau today offered at the House of Commons an official apology for the treatment of the Italian-Canadian community in the 1940s. The mea culpa recited by the Prime Minister for the decisions taken by the government of the time led by William Lyon Mackenzie King was not limited, as was to be expected, to the narrative of the suffering and injustice suffered by 600 men and four women of Italian origin interned in concentration camps scattered throughout the country, but touched all the strings of labour and tribulations suffered by all Italian Canadians since June 1940. The long-awaited official apology has finally arrived. Today, as promised in 2019, the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, apologized to the Italian-Canadians for the internment suffered in World War II. The 76th Anniversary of the liberation of Mauthausen-Gusen, an international ceremony

This year, people around the world commemorate the 76th anniversary of the liberation of Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp (Gusen, Austria).

Over the weekend, Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zbigniew Rau issued a statement to participants commemorating the event on May 15 and 16. “Former prisoners, of whom only a handful are still alive, and along with them, Poland and other countries, have been consistently calling for years, for a dignified commemoration of the victims of the Gusen camp”.

The award was announced by the Indian Ministry of Culture this Monday afternoon. It is evident that this award was given to Bangabandhu in recognition of his contribution to the social, economic and political transition of the country by liberating Bangladesh, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.
