School, Ontario Labour Board to rule on legality of strike

TORONTO – It is open war between the Government of Ontario and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). On Friday, the first day of the strike by the 55,000 union members employed in schools, thousands of people demonstrated outside Queen’s Park and the offices of Conservative Party provincial MPs. Schools in the province will still be closed tomorrow and, according to union leaders, will remain closed until a collective agreement is signed with the government.

TECT threatens strike in labour dispute with TCDSB

Things may get a little more difficult for some Toronto area students this coming Monday. The Toronto Catholic Elementary Teachers Union (TECT) is prepared to commence strike action as early as next week. If TECT and the Toronto Catholic District School (TCDSB) fail to come to an agreement in the next few days, teachers are in a position to stop instruction services as of January 31, 2022.

Toronto extends cancellation of major festivals and summer events until Labour Day

Some of Toronto’s major summer festivals, including the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), have been canceled for the second consecutive year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The slap in the face came on Friday (May 14), after the city announced that is extending the cancellation of in-person City-led and City-permitted outdoor events to September 6. (more…)
