It will be easier for immigrants to work in their professions

TORONTO – Make it easier for foreign workers to find employment that reflects their professional field. This is the objective of a project presented today in Queen’s Park by the Minister of Labour Monte McNaughton, which if it were to be approved would eliminate the requirement – requested by 23 trade associations – for which a given foreign worker must have work experience in Canada before having his professional qualification equalized. The measure specifically illustrates different job categories that will be affected including architects, engineers, teachers, social workers and accountants.  (more…)

Elections in Ontario, we will have a long election campaign

TORONTO – Let’s fasten our seat belts and get ready: in Ontario we will have to see a very long election campaign. Which, incidentally, has already begun a few weeks ago, from September 21 to be precise, the day after the federal elections. Pounding commercials on TV, radio, on the Internet and on social media, announcements on unlikely investments, promises, pacts with voters, plans for the future, slogans, all seasoned with accusations, controversies and poisons: June 2, 2022 is a date still far away, but already in recent weeks we have had a taste of what, willy-nilly, is waiting for us.  (more…)

A photo finish for what will likely appear to be another minority government

After a short 5-week campaign, voting day has arrived. Tomorrow, Canadians across the Nation will head to the polls to cast their vote. Some may still be asking whether holding an election in the middle of a pandemic was necessary. Either way, casting a vote gives Canadians the opportunity and privilege to have a say in Canada’s future government.

Election Day coming up. How will you vote?

TORONTO – I voted in the advance polls. Like many readers of the Corriere Canadese, I have been taken aback by the riding profiles offered daily by Priscilla Pajdo in our pages. No other publication has been providing their readers with as extensive and detailed a picture of any constituency as her pieces have. She has focused on districts where 9% or more of the population are of Italian origin.  (more…)

It’s countdown for the two debates, Ontario will be decisive

TORONTO – It’s countdown to the two televised debates between the leaders of federal parties. A double appointment, that of tomorrow evening in French and on Friday in English, considered as the real key moment of the electoral campaign in view of the appointment at the polls on September 20th. The prime minister candidates approach the two debates with different moods and objectives, based on what happened in the three weeks of the electoral campaign and, above all, taking into account the polls that over the last month have recorded a profound change in the balance of power between the parties in the race. Afghanistan, the new Islamic government: among the ministers a ‘wanted’ from the FBI. Italy: “We will return to Kabul”

KABUL – Italy and Afghanistan: faraway, so close. After the “Taliban” opening in recent days, with the invitation of the spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid to reopen the tricolor embassy in Kabul, today the Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, declared that Italy wants to guarantee a government presence in the Islamic Emirate. “With the countries of the area and with our partners we are reflecting on the creation of a joint presence in Afghanistan with mainly consular functions and which serves as an immediate point of contact”, said Di Maio in the briefing on Afghanistan in the Parliament. Afghanistan, the Pope: “I pray that many countries will protect those seeking a new life”

VATICAN CITY – “Help the Afghans”. The call comes from St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. It was launched by Pope Francis, after the Sunday Angelus. “In these troubled times that see Afghans seeking refuge – said the Pontiff – , I pray for the most vulnerable among them. I pray that many countries will welcome and protect those seeking a new life. I pray also for the internally displaced persons and that they may receive assistance and the necessary protection. May young Afghans receive education, an essential good for human development. And may all Afghans, whether at home, in transit, or in host countries, live with dignity, in peace and fraternity with their neighbours”.  (more…)

Electoral uncertainty: at the polls the undecided will be a key factor

TORONTO – The second week of the election campaign brings with it the unknowns and the grey areas of the first. Confirming the climate of uncertainty that is accompanying the approach to the appointment at the polls on September 20th comes the new Ipsos poll that certifies that the outcome of the early elections is far from decided. On the contrary, the volatility of the electorate is much higher than in the past and, ultimately, the choice of the great mass of undecided will be the real needle in the balance at the polls.  (more…)

Canadian Ministers: “We will help the Afghans as long as possible”

OTTAWA – Over 1,100 people already evacuated and the promise of “tireless” work to continue ripping people out of conflict-ravaged Afghanistan “as long as it is safe to do so”. This, in a nutshell, is what emerged from today’s press conference which saw four ministries of the Trudeau government intervene on the Afghan question. Maryam Monsef (Women), Marco Mendicino (Immigration), Harjit Sajjan (Defense) and Marc Garneau (Foreign Affairs) took stock of the situation, answering questions from journalists. (more…)

The election will be a referendum on how Trudeau handled the pandemic

TORONTO – The federal vote on September 20 is a gamble for Justin Trudeau. At the polls, the election will inevitably turn into a sort of referendum on how the outgoing prime minister managed the Covid-19 emergency and, in the future, on how the country can get out of the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. According to the polls, the Liberal leader at the starting line is ahead of the other candidates for the leadership of Canada, although the goal of achieving a parliamentary majority – unlike the vote two years ago – still remains a long way off.  (more…)

Afghanistan, sos for stuck Canadians. “We will bring you home”

TORONTO – The question is: how many Canadians are still stuck in Afghanistan? The federal government will not disclose it. “Security reasons”. “Due to the security situation in Afghanistan, Global Affairs does not disclose the number of Canadians registered in the Canadian overseas registration database (Roca),” reads an e-mailed statement from a Global Affairs Canada (Gac) spokesperson to Global News, on Sunday night. And, above all, it is unknown if, how and when all these people (and with them the 20,000 Afghans that the government announced on Friday that it wants to welcome) will be able to “land” in Canada.  (more…)
