Italy joins Canada
against arbitrary detentions

Marzio Pelù, February 19, 2021August 25, 2023

[GTranslate]ROME – “Congratulations to Canada for the launch of the Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State relations. Ready to engage constructively with international partners to put an end to this heinous practice “: this is the text of the tweet published a few days ago in the official profile of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with which the Farnesina manifests Italy’s support for the Canadian declaration against arbitrary detention in relations between states. There are, therefore, 57 states that support the Canadian initiative (read the Declaration here: Arbitrary detention in state-to-state relations). “A quarter of the countries [of the world], from all continents, come together to tell those who are arbitrarily arrested for diplomatic reasons that they are not alone. We are with them – declared Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau -: this illegal and immoral practice puts citizens of all countries at risk and undermines the rule of law ”.

The reference, implied, is the case of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavo

r, two Canadian citizens arrested in China in December 2018 after the Canadian authorities had released the handcuffs on the wrists of Meng Wanzhou, leader of the Chinese technology giant Huawei and daughter of the founder. of the group, stopped at the request of the US authorities who want to try her on fraud charges related to trading with Iran.

So, also Italy is joining it, as we read on Twitter (see the tweet in the pic and read it here: Farnesina’s tweet) where Italy says it is ready “to engage constructively with international partners to put an end to this atrocious practice”. As is well known, in Italy there is concern about the case of Patrick Zaki, a researcher at the University of Bologna detained for a year in Egypt, but according to the Italian magazine Formiche.net – read here: Perché l’Italia si unisce al Canada contro le detenzioni arbitrarie (c’entra Huawei) – the main objective of the initiative is Beijing: “And since our country (fortunately) does not have a dossier of arbitrary detentions opened with China, what comes from Rome could be a direct message to Beijing on 5G and in line with the Atlanticist vision of the new president Draghi. A signal sent precisely in the phases in which the new government is working on the Recovery Fund which currently provides 46 billion euros for digitization. A treasure on which several companies have set their eyes, including the Chinese Huawei and Zte, towards which the hostility of the United States has not diminished despite the field of the guard between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the White House ”.
