TORONTO – Just what do they do? I first heard this expression uttered in a fashion that only the redoubtable former mayor of North York and subsequently first Mayor of the [amalgamated] City of Toronto – Mel Lastman. He was “surprised” that the then Federal Minister responsible for seniors and Housing showed up in Toronto to discuss common policy objectives between the two Legislative bodies, albeit a mouse and elephant relationship in terms of size, scope and resources.
TORONTO – It was the nineteen-fifties, a post-war decade of emigration from Italy closely resembling a mass exodus -especially from the South. The reasons are varied but followed the usual pattern of “push-pull” factors such as population explosions, changing economic factors, restoration of peace inducements… the list goes on…

Le ragioni sono varie, ma seguivano il consueto schema di fattori “spinta-attrazione” come l’esplosione demografica, i cambiamenti economici, gli incentivi al ripristino della pace… e l’elenco potrebbe continuare…
TORONTO – Confesso di monitorare altri media e stampa, nordamericani e transatlantici. I miei obiettivi sono palesemente ovvi: (a) “tastare il polso” di ciò che è importante in diverse società socio-politiche, le cui iniziative potrebbero avere un impatto sui nostri lettori, e (b) cercare di capire come viene interpretata la “narrativa” che circonda tali iniziative…
TORONTO – I confess to monitoring other press and media, North-American and Trans-Atlantic. My goals are are transparently obvious: to “take the pulse” of (a) what is of importance in various socio/political societies whose initiatives may impact our own readership and, (b) understand how the “narrative” surrounding those initiatives is interpreted. Typically, I ignore – at my peril – outlets that have a history of uncontested predictability. Any information contained in their transmission is available, albeit varnished, elsewhere. Their “distinct insights” may provide value.
