EASTER BREAD RECIPE

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons yeast (1 packet)
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 egg beaten plus 1 teaspoon water
  • 3 eggs hard-boiled and dyed
  • sprinkles

 Add butter to milk and heat in a small pot until butter melts thoroughly. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Mix yeast, salt and sugar, add eggs and whisk lightly.  Proceed to add to milk mixture along with 2 cups of flour.

Transfer to stand mixer with dough hook attachment. Slowly add 2 additional cups of flour and knead for 5 to 7 minutes.

Turn sticky mixture onto a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 4 to 6 minutes.

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rest for 30 minutes. 

Roll dough into a rectangle and allow for 6 even rolls approximately 12 inches long.

Form 3 braids pinching the ends to seal firmly.  

Shape 3 braids into 3 ovals.  Cover with plastic wrap and a tea towel and allow to rest for 60 seconds. the breads will double in size.

Beat 1 egg with water and brush the top of each bread then decorate with sprinkles.

Bake in a 350 F. oven for about 20 minutes.    Allow cooling on the wire rack.
