Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.

WUHAN – The coronavirus pandemic is “most likely” of animal origin. Research conducted so far suggests this, but the host animal remains to be identified. This was said at a press conference by Liang Wannian (in the pic), head of the team of Chinese experts who worked with the World Health Organization delegation on a mission to China to try to reconstruct the origins of the pandemic. “Bats and pangolins are potential candidates for the transmission of the virus”, he said. The WHO investigation team dismissed the idea that a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology started the pandemic.
ROMA – Otto tecnici e quindici politici con alcune riconferme: il Governo Draghi è pronto. Il premier incaricato è salito al Colle per sciogliere la riserva e sottoporre la lista dei ministri al presidente della Repubblica, Sergio Mattarella, che l’ha approvata, firmando i decreti di nomina: il giuramento è previsto per sabato 13 febbraio alle ore 12.. Quindici, dunque, i ministri politici: 4 del M5S, 3 di FI, 3 del Pd, 3 della Lega, 1 per Italia Viva e 1 per Leu. Ma vediamo chi fa parte della squadra di governo.

ROME – Draghi Government: which program? Among the key-points of the future executive, in the first place there is obviously the pandemic, against which the vaccination campaign is expected to revive the economy: restarting work and protecting the people who will not have it. Another point, the school, for which it is foreseen the extension of the school calendar and the strengthening of the teaching staff. Finally, the opening of construction sites, infrastructures and three major reforms: public administration, civil justice and taxation. The ongoing consultations with the parties focus on these issues. Will there be a good summary for everyone?
What is the tree of the year? Not just the most beautiful, but the one with an important story? This will be decided by the people of the internet through an online vote open until 28 February on the site www.treeoftheyear.org as part of the competition organized by the Environmental Partnership Association (Epa), a grouping of six foundations from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia that support projects aimed at protecting the environment and activating local communities. ROMA – Governo Draghi: qual è il programma? Fra i punti-chiave del futuro esecutivo, al primo posto c’è ovviamente la pandemia, contro la quale si prevede il potenziamento della campagna vaccinale per risollevare l’economia: far ripartire il lavoro e tutelare le persone che non lo avranno. Altro punto, la scuola, per la quale si prevede l’allungamento del calendario scolastico e il potenziamento del corpo docenti. Infine, apertura dei cantieri, infrastrutture e tre grandi riforme: pubblica amministrazione, giustizia civile e fisco. Le consultazioni in corso con i partiti vertono su questi temi. Si troverà una sintesi buona per tutti?

MARKHAM – The pandemic, for an artist, can also be a source of inspiration. And so it was for Carlo Bianchini, a young Canadian singer-songwriter son of Italian immigrants. Between the first and the second lockdown, Carlo wrote and recorded, in his home-studio in Markham, the album “Quarantine Sessions”.

Pfizer and Moderna have started testing their vaccines on children from 12 years of age and hope to have the results of the trial by the summer: according to New York Times (read here: Covid Vaccines for Kids Are Coming, but Not for Many Months), the two pharmaceutical companies could later start testing on children even younger. Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, and AstraZeneca also have similar projects, but they are at a less advanced stage than Pfizer and Moderna. (more…)

ORTONA – A square of Canadian Heroes in Italy: it is the one inaugurated last weekend in Ortona, the town in the province of Chieti (Abruzzo) which in December 1943 was the scene of a bloody battle, on the banks of the Moro river, between the Allied force and the Nazi troops: on that occasion 1,665 soldiers fell, of which 1,375 were Canadian, now buried in the Canadian Military Cemetery of Ortona, in English “Moro River Canadian War Cemetery”.
