TORONTO – Ako’y buhay na noon at alam ko nangyari sa Kuba Mesel Krises panahon. Oktubre 1962. Ang dalawang presidente, John F. Kennedy nang Amerika at “Soviet Premier” Nikita Khrushchev ay pinakaba ang buong mundo sa kanilang tuhod sa takot sa giyera nuklare. Iyon ay hindi naganap. Ang nangyari ay buong ganap pitaya’an ekonomia sa Kuba nang US na hangang ngayon. Balik tayo sa tano, “gumagana ba ang pitaya’an?”, ang aking sagot hindi para sa Kuba. Itong maliit na bayan ito na ang layo ay 90 milyahe lang sa “Key West Florida” ay nakatiis at nabubuhay nang 63 taon hangang ngayon na hindi nakikipag nigosyo sa US.
TORONTO – I was already around when the Cuban Missile Crisis happened in October 1962. Both US President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Krushchev kept the world at its toes, fearing a nuclear war. This didn’t happen though. What happened was a full scale economic sanction against Cuba by the US which stands till now. So, to the question “Do Sanctions Work?”, my reply would be, not for Cuba. This small country which is a mere 90 miles from Key West, Florida, has dug in for 63 years now and has managed to survive without trading with the US.
