L’exhibition inizierà oggi, con un opening previsto in orario 6.30-8pm, all’Architecture and Design Gallery, Daniels Building, 1 Spadina Crescent, in Toronto.

OTTAWA – Not only Europe: Canada is also in the grip of heat and fires. Environment Canada today issued hot warnings in four provinces: Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec. Temperatures could reach 30 ° C in parts of northwestern and northeastern Ontario, and similar conditions are also expected in southwestern and southeastern areas. “Heat warnings” remain in place in parts of northern Manitoba, where the fires have required additional air quality “sos” due to smoke (as well as in British Columbia). Mississauga residents are still recovering after digging out of the first major snowfall in 2022. During the weekly press conference, Mayor Bonnie Crombie confirmed that many parts of the city experienced an accumulation of 45 cm of snow, the most in a single day since 1944. While residents went straight to work digging out their driveways and walkways, many would have to wait days until city plows dug out their street. (more…)

Electric vehicles (EV) may not solve the issues associated with climate change; they may play a key role in helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). According to Our World in Data, the energy sector is responsible for 73% of all GHG emissions. That rate includes roughly 16% of emissions associated with transportation, of which 12% is related to road transportation.
In Canada, road transportation accounts for roughly one-fifth of the nation’s total GHG emissions. Eliminating carbon emissions from passenger vehicles is part of the national plan to reach net-zero by 2050. (more…)
There has been a concentrated international effort to combat climate change. One main focus is on the cutting of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), carbon dioxide (CO2) being one of main culprits. But where do these emissions come from and who is responsible for the majority of carbon emissions?
According to the World Inequality Report 2022 (December 2021), data analysis by a team of world-leading economists suggests that the richest 10% of the global population produces close to 50% of GHG. (more…)

Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. We may be overlooking them as a source of renewable energy, whether thermal or mechanical. The oceans capture the sun’s heat while their currents, and waves generate mechanical power. Harnessing the power of this vast natural resource, while protecting its ecosystem and biodiversity were among the topics of discussion at the COP26 Summit.
Canada appears to be among global leaders when assessing ocean environment, marine activity, technology innovation, policy and regulation, as outlined in the MIT Technology Review: The Blue Technology Barometer 2021 Report (BTB).

This past year has been one of devastating natural disasters, from deadly heatwaves to catastrophic wildfires and raging floods. The intensifying climate crisis was top of mind for world leaders and climate experts at the COP26 Summit that ended in a last-minute compromise to “phase down” the use of coal.
Environmental activists point to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as one of the main culprits in the climate crisis. Pressure is mounting in the power sector to transition from GHG emitting sources of energy like coal to more renewable sources. Solar power appears to be leading the way.

TORONTO – All roads led to Italy for the 2-day G20 summit meeting this year. US President Joe Biden had to put on hold domestic issues just to be in Rome for this summit. Food is essential to our survival. With food prices on the rise, roughly two out of five Canadians have altered their behaviour when shopping for groceries, all in an effort to save money. While it costs more to feed our families, it may also cause us to reflect on how much food we waste.

TORONTO – May 12th of this year saw chickens and fishes dying from the heat in Dagupan City, Philippines. The temperature that day registered at 52 Celsius. Early this summer, Lytton, BC, registered a record high of 49.4 C. The following day, wildfire devastated the village. In 2018, two relatives travelled to San Francisco early November to meet up with their cousins who were touring the US. While their plane descended for landing, they could see wildfires from the plane window. When they stepped out of the terminal, smoke was in the air. They had to wear masks. This, in SFO, in November. On their last full day in that city, the cable cars, which give SFO its character, stopped running for the day. The streets of San Francisco were covered in dust and visibility was so low, operating a cable car became risky, given that this is done manually. (more…)
