Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – Still many deaths, but hospitalizations are decreasing. The doubt, which we have already expressed in our yesterday’s Covid updating, remains: in the daily “balance” of beds (i.e. the difference between new admissions to hospitals and discharges), in the “discharge” item only the recovered or even the dead are included? →
TORONTO – The Quebec government’s decision to impose a tax on no vax continues to cause controversy. For now, no other province seems oriented to follow the same path as the executive led by Francois Legault. Too many problems of a legal nature – there are those who hypothesize the evident unconstitutionality of the measure – or of simple political gain: it is a highly divisive measure and no other prime minister has decided to risk. Yet, the debate over the appropriateness and feasibility of the measure goes on.
TORONTO – An external support of the NDP to Justin Trudeau that guarantees the survival of the government for at least two to three years. It is on this possible outcome that the Liberals and Neo-Democrats are working exactly two weeks after the first session of the federal parliament since the last elections on 20 September. Yesterday the respective parliamentary groups met for the first time and behind closed doors the pros and cons of the potential agreement between the forces of the Canadian center-left were examined. →
TORONTO – “Fratelli coltelli”. Or, if you prefer, “Parenti serpenti”. These are the titles of two Italian comedies of the 90s that are well suited to the squalid show that the members of the Rogers family, owners of the homonymous telecommunications giant, are giving, publicly. In English we could translate those titles like “Dearest Relatives, Poisonous Relations”, to say that in the Rogers family there is a real feud that has also ended up on social media, in particular on Twitter where Martha Rogers, director of Rogers Communications, asked her brother Edward to “resign”. But let’s take a step back. →
TORONTO – With numerous polling stations still in the counting phase, Justin Trudeau’s victory in the federal elections is already clear. These are the percentages as we write (around 10.30 pm): Liberals 37.5%, Conservatives 32.8%, NDP 16.2%, Bloc Quebecois 5.5%, People Party 4.7%, Green 2, 5%. At the moment, the Liberals would not have the seats for a majority government (they are stuck at 144 against 117 for the Conservatives) but the results of many seats are still lacking.
