Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
MONTREAL – Here comes the “health tax” for the unvaccinated. Basically: if you don’t get vaccinated, you end up burdening the health system, so it’s right that you pay. This was announced today by the premier of Quebec, François Legault, in light of the continuous increase in hospitalizations (and deaths, only today: 62 in Quebec) in the hospitals of the province.
Starting the 5th of January, students will return to virtual learning and Ontario will return to a modified Phase Two of its reopening plan, with the closure of indoor restaurants, gyms, theaters and with lower capacity limits in other settings. The high to the roadmap was announced today by Prime Minister Doug Ford in response to the Omicron variant that in recent weeks has been causing a record number of cases.
TORONTO – Canada has officially registered more than two million cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic: 2,058,872, to be exact. And they are probably “few”, given that on the one hand health workers are preparing for a possible post-holiday peak driven by the fast-spreading Omicron variant and on the other hand the numbers of the last few days could represent only the tip of the iceberg given the difficulty in processing all tampons. OTTAWA – In order to help those affected by the measures imposed to cope with the spread of the Covid-19 variant Omicron, the federal government has temporarily expanded eligibility for two economic aid programs. This was announced today by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “We will be there for the most affected regions, for specific sectors such as art and culture, hospitality and tourism – said Trudeau during a virtual press conference – we will be present to protect you and your families”.
TORONTO – Skyrocketing infections and more than thirty thousand deaths from Covid-19 throughout Canada since the beginning of the pandemic: these are the sad data of today, negative on all fronts. Let’s start with Ontario, which reported the highest daily count of new cases in seven months. The province has in fact registered 2,421 new infections (53% of which of the Omicron variant), with an impressive increase compared to 1,808 new cases. Earlier this week, 1,476 new cases had been registered on Monday, 1,536 on Tuesday and 1,429 on Wednesday. →
