Trump, “endorsement” for Carney: “Easier to deal with a Liberal”

Marzio Pelù, March 19, 2025March 19, 2025

TORONTO – A “heavy” endorsement for Mark Carney and the Canadian Liberals: U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he wouldn’t mind if the Liberal Party won the next Canadian election, saying that “I think it’s easier to deal actually with a Liberal and maybe they’re going to win, but I don’t really care. It doesn’t matter to me at all…”.

During an interview on Fox News‘ “The Ingraham Angle”, host Laura Ingraham said that Trump’s treatment of Canada could push the Liberals into power, win the next election, and lead a government hostile to the United States. “I don’t care” Trump said and then he took aim at the Liberals’ main opponent, Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre, without even naming him. “The Conservative that’s running is, stupidly, no friend of mine. I don’t know him, but he said negative things. When he says negative things, I couldn’t care less” Trump added.

Last night, President Donald Trump endorsed Mark Carney.

Why? Because, as Trump said, he’s “easier” to deal with, and knows that I will be a tough negotiator and always put Canada First. Carney is weak and would cave to Trump’s demands, just like he did when he moved his company… pic.twitter.com/Dv6FgyyLYg

The U.S. President has taken a tough stance on Canada, imposing and then suspending, on several occasions, tariffs on Canadian imports and repeatedly threatening to make it the 51st state of the United States. But this has actually helped the Liberals who until a few weeks ago seemed headed for certain defeat against the Conservatives. Since Trump – a conservative – came into office, the Canadian electorate has shifted towards the Liberals and the departure of Justin Trudeau has helped them even more, given that their leader was particularly unwelcome, by now, to the vast majority of Canadians.

The new leader and prime minister, Mark Carney, on the other hand, is liked: many of the latest opinion polls have shown that the Liberals are closing the gap or even overtaking the Conservatives. And they also show that the majority of Canadians prefer Carney to Poilievre as prime minister.

The election campaign is underway and the Liberals in their campaign ads are portraying Poilievre as a right-wing populist along the same lines as Trump. For his part, Poilievre adopted the slogan “Canada First” in the face of threats from the United States and tried to tie Carney to the former Trudeau government, which has lost popularity in recent years, to the point of hitting rock bottom, with percentages that put the Liberal Party on the verge of extinction.

Polievre’s reply to Trump’s words arrived on X – Twitter, this morning: “Last night, President Donald Trump endorsed Mark Carney. Why? Because, as Trump said, he’s “easier” to deal with, and knows that I will be a tough negotiator and always put Canada First. Carney is weak and would cave to Trump’s demands, just like he did when he moved his company headquarters from Canada to New York City. Canadians don’t want a weak and conflicted leader. They want a strong Prime Minister who will put Canada First”.
