Singh, ultimatum to Trudeau. Yet another

Marzio Pelù, February 13, 2024February 13, 2024

OTTAWA – NDP tries to stand up and to be counted: this seems to be the goal of the initiative by Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, who sent all members an e-mail asking for support on a sort of “ultimatum” to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: pharmacare by March 1st or everyone at home. Technical evidence of a crisis, in short, with Singh who, despite attacking Trudeau on a daily basis, continues to keep the Liberal minority government alive with the votes of the NDP, keeping his feet in two shoes: majority and opposition.

“I’ve made this very clear to Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberals — we expect pharmacare legislation by March 1. We’ve been fighting – Singh wrote in the letter – to help all Canadians get access to the prescription drugs they need. As you know, the Liberals missed the initial deadline, and they just can’t delay again. I won’t have it. Add your name to put the Liberals on notice –  to table pharmacare legislation by March 1. We shouldn’t have to pull teeth with the Liberals to deliver support for Canadians. If they continue to delay, there will be repercussions. Going into the final weeks of these negotiations, it’ll be a big help to point to the powerful grassroots movement demanding pharmacare for people. I have always believed in the power of a grassroots movement to push government to do what’s right — and we need that now more than ever. Can I count on you? Demand that Justin Trudeau table pharmacare legislation by March 1 and no later: ndp.ca/pharmacare-act. Thanks for your support”, Jagmeet Singh.

In the online petition, we read: “No one should go without the medicine they need because they can’t afford it. But that’s the reality for millions of Canadians. Right now, Canadians pay the third highest prices for medication in the world. Join Jagmeet Singh in calling on Justin Trudeau to support the NDPs plan to deliver universal, comprehensive pharmacare to Canadians”.

It remains to see whether Singh’s “threats” will be followed by action from Trudeau or, if not, whether Singh will bring down the federal government. Unless it’s yet another fake-ultimatum from Singh.
