San Marino, from world “capital” of infections to “Covid-free” thanks to Sputnik

Marzio Pelù, April 19, 2021August 25, 2023

SAN MARINO – From record to record. San Marino, the small Republic nestled between Emilia Romagna and the Marche, in the center of Italy, could soon be a Covid-free state, also thanks to the use of the Russian Sputnik vaccine that was administered here massively, given the delays recorded in the distribution of other vaccines.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign in the Republic of San Marino, 21,000 vaccine administrations have already been exceeded out of a total of about 35,000 inhabitants.

A turning point for the small Republic which in recent months has held another negative world record: that of the largest number of infected people and deaths in relation to the population, more than the United States, India and Brazil (obviously in proportion). In total – since the beginning of the pandemic – 5,030 infected and 88 deaths have been recorded. But in the last 24 hours (the figure is April 19) the new cases have been zero. The vaccination campaign therefore works and the results can also be seen on the reopening front: teaching in the presence, restaurants also open for dinner, postponed curfew at midnight from next April 26.

All thanks to the vaccines, on which the San Marino government has worked hard, first to enter the European supply of vaccines such as Pfizer and Moderna, approved by Ema and Aifa, then, due to the slowdowns well known also in Italy, to stipulate a agreement for the supply of Sputnik V. Thus, in two months the Titan State received 68 thousand doses of Russian vaccine: 34 thousand first doses and 34 thousand second doses. And 7,020 doses of the Pfizer Biontech vaccine have also arrived in the Republic of the Titan.

As of April 19, 2021, according to data from the ISS of San Marino, it appears that a total of 21,905 vaccine doses have been administered: 13,460 vaccinated with the first dose, 8,445 also with the second. 11,465 first doses of Sputnik and 7,136 of the second and 1,995 first doses of Pfizer and 1,309 of Pfizer Biontech boosters were administered. And in the space of ten days, it has gone from a percentage of infections of 10% to one of 1-2%, up to zero today.

And given that vaccines should even advance in San Marino, we are considering immunizing the cross-border workers – about 6,500 – who frequent the small Republic every day and who could bring the virus “into the house”: a agreement with the Italian State, to allow the Titan to vaccinate even non-San Marino citizens. And thus become totally Covid-free.
