Dundas Square, 3 million dollars to change a name. Iacobelli writes to Nunziata and the Councillor advocates for residents of York – South Weston

Marzio Pelù, December 22, 2023December 22, 2023

TORONTO – “Toronto’s city council has made the stupid and tax payer wasteful decision to change the name of Dundas Square. It will cost at least 3 million dollars, when the city is already in debt. Of course, by then, the figure will surely be much higher. But that doesn’t faze the city councillors. The important thing is to make woke decisions and to virtue signal…”: Lou Iacobelli wrote this letter on the blog “Everyday For Life Canada”, explaining that “the name Dundas was taken from the 18 century Scottish politician Henry Dundas. Who was Henry Dundas you ask? The man was an abolitionist who actually worked to end the slave trade and actually helped to bring an end to slavery. But not fast enough, for the comfortable and woke of today who just want to send out the right moral signals. Toronto’s politically correct elites will not let history, facts or truth get in the way of their progressive narrative…”.

Lou Iacobelli sent the letter to City Councillor for Ward 5, Frances Nunziata (in the pic above), who has received an immense amount of calls and emails from constituents all over York – South Weston, concerned with the costs associated with these proposed changes. Although the Councillor believes change is always welcome for the betterment of communities, she agrees with the thousands of constituents across Ward 5, that the City is currently facing a huge economic deficit, and any tax-payer resources the City spends should be initiatives that directly support our communities.

Anyway, although Council approved the renaming of Younge-Dundas Square, the Councillor Nunziata would like to ensure all constituents that “no taxpayer funds will be used for the renaming. All funds used to change the name to Sankofa Square – Nunziata explains – will be from Community Benefits Funds from nearby Developments around the Square. The changes being proposed for the TTC station beneath the square has been shown interest by Toronto Metropolitan University, to fund and rename the entire station”.

As for Dundas Street, and all other City assets including the Jane-Dundas Library and Dundas West Station, Councillor Holyday introduced a motion in Council to pause this process until further notice. Although the Councillor fully supported this motion, “it unfortunately did not receive enough votes in Council to be passed”. Rest assured, the Councillor “will keep advocating for residents of York – South Weston in the future regarding this issue”.
