Julia Prajza is the chosen artist for the “Rooster of Barcelos Project”

Julia Prajza’s design proposal was the final choice for the “Rooster of Barcelos Project” (in the pic, courtesy of Little Portugal on Dundas BIA), a public art project presented by the City of Toronto, in conjunction with Little Portugal on Dundas BIA, StreetARToronto, the Office of Deputy Mayor Ana Bailão, the Consulate General of Portugal in Toronto and the Barcelos Migrant Association.

The announcement of the winner (among five finalists) took place during the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities, in Toronto, Ontario, which took place in virtual format.

The chosen artist will now recreate his artistic concept in a rooster statue with more than two meters in height, which will then be exhibited in September in the Little Portugal neighbourhood as a work of urban art. This will be located at 1212 Dundas Street West on Lakeview Avenue Parkette.

Ana Bailão states that “this project showcases the deep connection of this neighbourhood and the Portuguese Canadian Community”. And she says she has no doubts that the winning artist's creative effort will “create a sense of belonging for Portuguese-Torontonians while celebrating the heritage and history of Little Portugal in Toronto”.

An enthusiast of the project that will contribute to local urban revitalization, Anabela Taborda, Chair of Little Portugal on Dundas BIA, stresses that the rooster “will soon live in this community in a central location as a symbol of our culture and hope for the future”.

In the statement that accompanies the artistic creation, Julia Prajza explains that the project, inspired by the theme "new beginnings, hope, and optimism", was created to honour the rich culture of the Portuguese people.

“Because of the Rooster’s symbolic importance, vibrant colours were used as a celebration of energy emanating from the sculpture. Bold, playful, and organic shapes compliment the Rooster’s curvaceous body. Within those shapes, an array of different patterns fit together like illuminated stained glass pieces.”

Also, according to the artist, “the imagery is an abstract interpretation of Portuguese embroidery with a whimsical and modern twist. Contrasting colours of blues and yellows dance together in perfect harmony, symbolizing the country’s gorgeous coastal views, inspired by travels to Portugal with the everlasting sunshine and sparkling blue waters”.

Prajza concludes, stating that “this lively and decorative design is a joyful, positive representation of Little Portugal, bringing the symbolic Rooster to life”.
