Social media

Ricky Castellvi, March 22, 2021August 25, 2023

WHAT IS YOUR TRUE COLOR? Nowadays with technology, we expose our true colours not only within our community but also to the entire world. Our mouth has been replaced with our fingers.  What we type and post on social media does so much damage to our character. We all claim to be honest and well respected. Yet, how we behave most of the time is so contradictory to who we are.

As a good example, at this time of technology, I cringe every time I read attacks on the physical attributes of a person (ugly face, monster looking, short, fat, pig, etc) instead of constructively commenting on the issue at hand. Others attack people’s intelligence (dumb, stupid, retard, etc).  Some even attack with threats and ill will (I’ll kill you, I hope you drop dead, etc). The scariest part is that people are even typing and spewing toxic unprintable words.

The sad part of it all is that many support such behaviour, excuse it (that’s the way he talks, he’s just joking, he is very courageous, he’s my kind of person, etc) and even admire it. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths (insert: your fingers), but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” It is crystal clear that unwholesome talk does not build others up.  In addition, it surely is not benefitting those who hear them.

A good example of this story about social media is the story of the former president of the United States Donald Trump. Since he took office, he is always engaged with social media. Building up from day one constant posting of different text, comments, you name it, he had done it. It came to a point of building up division among Americans that lead to an insurrection attack on Capitol Hill and resulted in a lot of people getting hurt and resulted in deaths.

We can always voice out our ideas, views and even criticism in a constructive manner.

As far as I know, giving constructive criticism imparts a well-grounded and rational stance regarding the work of others.  Customarily, it involves both positive and negative pronouncements given in an amiable manner rather than an antagonistic one.

EXPOSING OUR TRUE COLOURS  “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Let me ask you this: “What is your heart full of?  What overflows from your mouth and fingers? How can we not be trembling with fear of our chosen words?

The words “approved” and “denied” bring to mind my work in Immigration and Refugee Board Tribunal. Many times, I find myself astonished while typing judgments.  The claimant by their own words, make it easy for me to make a decision to approved or denied. Nowadays, people reveal their true selves by how they talk and expose their true colours with what comes out of their mouths not only in person but also on social media for the whole world to see.
