TORONTO – Caroline Mulroney, President of the Treasury Board and Ontario Minister of Francophone Affairs, has announced that she will resign from the government led by Premier Doug Ford and will also step down as a Member of Provincial Parliament for the Progressive Conservative Party. She made the announcement in a letter posted on social media today, after informing Premier Ford on Sunday that she will officially resign on Friday, June 5.
“Serving as your Member of Provincial Parliament for York-Simcoe and as a member of the Ontario government for the past eight years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. It is not a decision I have made lightly,” Mulroney wrote in the letter addressed, first, to the citizens of York-Simcoe, the riding she represents.
“Two years ago, I lost my father (former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney – editor’s note). Last year, my husband Andrew and I became empty nesters. These are the kinds of moments that clarify what matters. Together they have led me to the conclusion that now is the right time to step back from elected life and begin a new chapter, one I am genuinely excited about.”
In her long and heartfelt letter, Mulroney reflects on achievements from her eight-year political career (first elected as MPP for York-Simcoe in 2018) and expresses gratitude to many: her family, constituency associations, local mayors and councils in York-Simcoe, her party caucus and government colleagues including Premier Doug Ford, her staff and office teams, provincial public servants in the OPS, the Francophone community of Ontario, and farmers in the Holland Marsh.
“I will miss the people I have worked with over the past eight years more than you know” she continued. “The people I have work alongside, including more than a few friends on the opposition benches, have made me a better person. The energy of Queen’s Park is one I hope I will carry with me forever. Theodore Roosevelt said it best: “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing”. Serving the people of York-Simcoe and Ontario has been exactly like that.”
Premier Ford commented on Mulroney’s resignation today, revealing that she visited him at his home to inform him of her decision. “We had a great conversation. What people don’t realize, our families are very good friends, and very good friends of Caroline, and her dad, and she wants to just focus on on her family moving forward. I think the world of Caroline,” Ford said, adding that Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy will temporarily serve as President of the Treasury Board.
