Flavio Volpe on US tariffs: “Prudence and caution before reacting”

cnmng, January 22, 2025January 22, 2025

TORONTO – On Tuesday,  the “Council on Canada-U.S. Relations”, established by Justin Trudeau met to explore countermeasures following the announcement by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to put a 25% tariff on all goods arriving from Canada. The “Council”, of eighteen members includes former Premiers, businessmen/women and heads of industrial sectors. Among them, Flavio Volpe, the only Italian-Canadian appointed by the Prime Minister. He is President of the APMA (Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association), an organization that represents one of the most important sectors of North American auto industry and that involves and connects Canada and the United States.

Volpe himself, by virtue of his direct experience in the field, summed up the work of the “Council”, making the final intervention before the cameras (see in the video by CPAC, here, from 1.01.51) and explaining, from an impartial point of view, that the best “weapons” in this phase are prudence and caution and that Canada must not “play its cards” until the threats from the US, which for now remain only threats, materialize. An invitation to calm, therefore, to react with lucidity and pragmatism in case of real necessity.
