Peel Regional Police considers “matter closed” in Brampton Council-Authorized Investigation

Priscilla Pajdo, June 18, 2021August 25, 2023

On June 17, the city of Brampton issued a press release updating the status of the Council-authorized investigation. The matter pertained to a substantive complaint letter, addressed to Brampton Council, received on April 22, 2021, involving a number of allegations including workplace misconduct, discrimination, improper hiring practices, destruction of information, harassment and procurement breaches.

At a Special Council Meeting (April 23), the decision was made to launch an investigation into the allegations and forwarded the matter to the Ontario Ombudsman and the Peel Regional Police.

On May 19, Council announced a 30-day review of the complaint, which is currently underway, led by a third-party firm Deloitte LLP.

The Ontario Ombudsman sent correspondence to Brampton City Council (May 27) which indicated the Ombudsman’s Office typically does not “review a concern that is subject to police investigation”. After reviewing the documentation provided, the letter states that the Office has “completed their consideration of these matters” and that “given these circumstances, we will not be reviewing this matter further”.

On June 15, Peel Regional Police sent a letter to Brampton Council. The letter indicated that after conducting their investigation into the allegations, the bulk of which “relate to human resource issues or complaints”, including allegations that may amount to criminal conduct, “no criminal wrongdoing has been discovered”.

Peel Regional Police also stated in the letter that pending any further information, “we are considering the matter closed”.
