Status update of Covid-19 cases worldwide

Here we provide a daily update of the data available for select countries and jurisdictions as of December 29, 2021, at 4:30 pm EST.

On Wednesday, health officials in Germany logged 41,816 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 7.1 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases, 83.6% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 381 Covid-related deaths for a total of 112,133 fatalities attributable to Covid-19.

Ontario, today 10,436 Covid-cases but they could be more than double

TORONTO – Covid-19 in Ontario, a new record broken: the province today recorded 10,436 new cases (and 3 deaths), surpassing the previous record-count of December 25 (10,412). But the actual infections in Ontario could be more than double: the laboratories have in fact processed 59,259 samples and 74,535 remain in the research phase. Not only that: simply booking a molecular test appointment in the Toronto area is now a real challenge, so many people with symptoms can’t even get tested.  →

Destinations to avoid, for reasons other than Covid-19

The year is drawing to a close and so too is the holiday season and all the craziness of 2021. From Covid-19 infections and its multiple mutations to catastrophic heat waves and deadly floods, it has been a tumultuous year. With 2022 around the corner, people are hoping for better days ahead and dreaming of that much needed getaway to escape all the mayhem.

Ontario: 74.783 casi attivi, 491 negli ospedali

TORONTO – È stato un Natale sotto assedio, per l’Ontario: quasi diecimila nuovi casi di Covid-19 al giorno, con un tasso di positività che è arrivato a sfiorare il 20%. Dati impressionanti, che evidenziano l’elevatissima diffusione del virus alla quale, però, non corrisponde un aumento in proporzione dei ricoveri negli ospedali: i pazienti ovviamente aumentano (con numeri simili sarebbe impossibile il contrario), ma il loro numero non raggiunge, almeno al momento, “picchi” altrettanto impressionanti. On Tuesday, health officials in Spain logged 99,671 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 6.0 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases, 83.6% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 114 Covid-related deaths for a total of 89,253 fatalities attributable to Covid-19. →

Fear Omicron in LTC, Ontario taking further action

The new Omicron variant is a risk in long-term care homes. And Ontario is trying to play ahead by putting in place temporary measures that will come into effect starting tomorrow when access to CTCs by general visitors will be suspended while only designated caregivers will be able to continue to enter long-term care homes. The daily absences of all residents for social reasons were also suspended.

No updates on Covid in Alberta from 23 December, but there is the ‘black market’ of data

TORONTO – Canada has officially registered more than two million cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic: 2,058,872, to be exact. And they are probably “few”, given that on the one hand health workers are preparing for a possible post-holiday peak driven by the fast-spreading Omicron variant and on the other hand the numbers of the last few days could represent only the tip of the iceberg given the difficulty in processing all tampons. But there is also who doens’t provide the data at all, such as Alberta. →

Ontario: 74,783 active cases, 491 in hospitals

TORONTO – It was a Christmas under siege for Ontario: almost ten thousand new cases of Covid-19 a day, with a positivity rate that has reached 20%. Impressive data, which highlight the very high spread of the virus which, however, does not correspond to an increase in the proportion of hospitalizations: patients obviously increase (with similar numbers the opposite would be impossible), but their number does not reach, at least moment, equally impressive “peaks”. And this should at least comfort, because while the data relating to the tests are not complete (as we will explain in a few lines), there is no escaping those of the hospitalizations: those who are sick end up in hospital. But let’s start with the infections.  →

Nakating sa maga malalaking at magagandang lobo na “Baby Boss”. Ang pag babalik nang tinatawag “Itim na Bieyernes” unang pintong bukassan. (90+ bigillantes nag papangap “Fast and the Furious” in Walnut Creek). Ang hinihiwalay na lugar para sa maga hindi gustong bisita sa “Thanksgiving” lamesa nang pamilya-“Omicron”.

TORONTO – There was much to give thanks for in the U.S. Thanksgiving.  A return to the Macy’s Parade with non-cardboard cutout children standing in the streets of New York, in wonderment of the “Boss Baby” balloon.  A return to Black Friday doorcrashers (90+ vigilantes recreating “Fast and the Furious” in Walnut Creek).  And setting a place for an unwanted visitor at the Thanksgiving family table – “Omicron”.
