Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – The Canadian Confederation, as a form of government, has a unique feature in its Constitution, or “corporate by-laws”. Under section 93, it ascribes to the provinces the sole jurisdiction for education. Within that section, it provides further exclusive “denominational rights” to certain citizens as a protection against the tyranny of the majority in a democratic society. →
TORONTO – When a grisly and gory crime hits close to home, it sends a shock wave to the whole Filipino-Canadian community of Toronto, especially to closer friends and relatives of the victim hearing for the first time that when a partner is murdered, the surviving partner is always the suspect. Tragic as it may be, the initial reaction is for everyone to send in their condolences. Only after Yostin Murillo, a main suspect of Costa Rican background, was arrested were friends and relatives of the couple able to breathe a sigh of relief. →
KABUL – While the embassies of all the countries of the world closed and the diplomats fled, he remained there, in the midst of chaos, among the desperate people of Kabul. And the photos that have immortalized him as he picks up a child to take him to safety at the airport have been around the world. Tommaso Claudi, the last official of the Italian embassy left at the Kabul airport after the return of the Taliban to Afghanistan, has been involved for days in evacuating his fellow citizens in the Afghan capital. But no one knew until those photos ended up on the “net”: you can see him, helmet over the shoulder and bulletproof vest, crouching on a wall to grab a 7 or 8 year old child and carry him safely to the side of the airport manned by the US military. →
TORONTO – The guidelines outlined by Ontario to deal with Covid in the province’s public schools are not enough. Dissatisfied with the protocols, which will be implemented with the start of the new school year, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has decided to do it itself and has drawn up a series of guidelines. Everything is silent, however, as far as the Toronto Catholic District School Board is concerned: the return to school is still shrouded in mystery. →
We are in the middle of summer, many of us have already been on vacation and many of us are still planning it. We would like to visit friends or relatives or spend a dream vacation in the United States or Europe. Our relatives and friends would like to visit us in Canada.
