As the third anniversary of the April Rebellion commemorated, the Canadian Foreign Policy Office urged the Nicaraguan government to rebuild democracy.

Through a tweet, Ottawa said: “Canada supports the Nicaraguan people on the third anniversary of their political crisis. We continue to ask the Nicaraguan government to rebuild democracy while respecting human rights and the enactment of agreed reforms for free and fair elections. and transparent “.

The third year of socio-political crisis in Nicaragua, which, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, has left a balance of 328 dead, more than one hundred thousand exiles, thousands of wounded and political prisoners, is commemorated under a police state that maintains the President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Deputy Prime Minister Rosario Murillo.

Not only Canada has spoken out about it, explains historian and activist Keith González. “Various countries have urged the Nicaraguan government to respect human rights and resume the democratic course, warning that otherwise sanctions would be applied. The United States approved the MagnitsKy Nica Act at the end of 2018, which provides sanctions for officials and relatives of Ortega involved in corruption and violation of human rights.

Persecutions continue

The socio-political crisis that Nicaragua is experiencing was triggered in April 2018 when massive protests that began against social security reforms and later due to the abuse of power by Ortega were canceled with armed attacks that left hundreds of people dead, imprisoned or missing. a situation that continues, explained González.

Twelve member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) have supported an eventual application of the Democratic Charter, to force the government of Managua to restore freedoms. The European Parliament maintains a similar position, which has threatened sanctions against people close to the regime if it does not give “signs of goodwill” at the dialogue table, González added.
