Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa observes Mujibnagar Day

Toronto, April 17: In a webinar platform due to the pandemic, the Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa has observed the historic Mujibnagar Day on Saturday with due solemnity and fervour as well as messages of the President and the Prime Minister gave on this day were read out followed by a special discussion session, says a press release.

In the discussion session with profound respect to the great architect of independence and Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with four national leaders under whom the Mujibnagar government, the country’s great independence was achieved through a nine-month-long bloody liberation war. The participants opined that through observance of the Mujibnagar Day, the new generation would be able to know the country’s true history and will be encouraged to contribute to building a ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Bangabandhu.

The discussion revealed that the contribution of the Mujibnagar government, headed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in absentia, in achieving the much-coveted independence through conducting the war of independence and maintaining close and strong relations with the international community.

His Excellency High Commissioner Dr. Khalilur Rahman paid solemn tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and four national leaders, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamruzzaman, three million martyrs and 200,000 Biranganas (war heroines) as well as the freedom fighters. He said that, from the political point of view, the formation of Mujibnagar government was immensely important and significant for our independence in terms of legal basis as it was consisted of elected members from the national and provincial elections in 1970 held under the then West Pakistan regime. He emphasized that Mujibnagar government played a key role to earn the then global support including guiding overall assistance to the nine months liberation war until the victory was achieved on 16 December in 1971. Dr. Rahman also mentioned the remarkable socio-economic achievements of Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangabandhu daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for which all should work to set afloat Bangladesh into a developed country by 2041.

Later the observance followed by a special prayer for the father of the nation, four national leaders, three million martyrs, 200,000 Biranganas, freedom fighters and also with the aspiration of peace and prosperity of the country it concluded.
