Letter from a mother: “We’d like to take our children to the park safely”

cnmng, January 27, 2022August 25, 2023

TORONTO – A mother wrote to CNMNG, to make a report that could be useful for all mothers who want to bring their children to the park safely. Here’s her letter.

“Dear Editor, maybe your readers can help identify her or look out for her. She’ about 5‘ 8” in height, maybe a little taller. Like many others, on Saturday, Jan 22nd, she thought it was a good idea to take her son to Cedarvale Park for some tobogganing; as did I”.

“There are common rules of etiquette and safety all need to observe when riding the slopes: first and foremost, wait until the slope is cleared before beginning your own descent. Secondly, travelling downhill at speeds that range from 15-30 kmph is no time to take selfies. Mystery mom, dressed in black and grey, and, like her son, riding a tubular toboggan was busy taking selfies when her son slammed full force into my son’s face as he was lifting himself off his sled”.

“Thank God I had compelled him to wear a helmet and face guard. He suffered whiplash, a concussion and bruising. Still, he asked for anyone around him to call for his mother – me. He was in pain, embarrassed and in need of help. I had fallen just before the impact but rushed as best I could to tend to him”.

“The other ‘supermom’ just brushed everything off: ‘he’s ok and he’ll be ok’, turned her back and rushed away. I’m guessing she didn’t see blood (thankfully) nor my blood boil. I did not think quickly enough to snap a picture of an individual who could be so insensitive and indifferent to a child in pain”.

“We have spent two days in hospital emergency, X-ray units, with Chiropractic and Sports Therapists. My son can’t sleep because of the pain”.

“His skeletal structure is still adjusting from the impact. The medical practitioners all tell me the helmet and face mask probably saved him from serious surgical intervention or, God-forbid, worse”.

“All this because supermom had to take selfies. If you were at Cedarvale Park on Saturday, just off Humewood Ave., opposite the parking lot by the hockey rink and recognize the individual please ask her to show some remorse. Call the editor of this outlet”.
