5G, the East beats everyone in speed
Europe and North America too far behind

Marzio Pelù, April 15, 2021August 25, 2023

[GTranslate]LONDON – No Italian city is in the top ten for 5G download speeds. Only three out of ten are European. And of the North American ones, only the Canadian Calgary appears in the ranking. The 5G world record is all oriental.

This is what emerges from the research carried out by the English company Opensignal, specialized in the study of world mobile networks, and published today on the website of the same company (to read it in detail: Benchmarking the Global 5G Experience – April 2021).

The city that occupies the first position is the South Korean Jeonju, whose citizens can count on the highest average download speed (5G Download Speed) of any other city analyzed. An average of 415.6 Mbps was recorded, 15% higher than the national one in South Korea.

And Jeonju is not the only case of cities that “beat in speed” the capital of their country: only three of the cities make up the global top ten, in fact, are capitals, namely Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Tokyo (Japan) and Dublin (Ireland). The runner-up is also not capital: Hsinchu City (Taiwan). And Barcelona and Melbourne also excelled over rivals Madrid and Sydney.

But the most curious case is that of Canada where the largest cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are surpassed by Calgary which occupies the tenth position in the world ranking and is the only North American center present in the world top ten (see the graph below).

Countries, South Korea still boasts the highest 5G Download Speed, while Taiwan excels in 5G Upload Speed. Japan has seen remarkable growth, gaining important positions in the Top 10 for average and peak download speeds. Also in this case, Europe does not shine, with Finland first – but only at European level: globally it is seventh – for average download speed in 5G (219.5 Mbps), the Netherlands for average upload speed in 5G (34.7 Mbps) and Greece, Spain and Switzerland for peak download speeds (see the graph at the top).

Europe recovers only by looking at the concrete user experience, with 5 countries in the Top 10 for the 5G Games Experience and 6 countries in the one for the 5G Voice App Experience (see the graph below): but Italy is absent from all three rankings.

On the other hand, Asian countries clearly dominate, once again, in the rankings relating to Download Speed, Peak Download Speed and 5G Video Experience (see the graph below).

All the graphs are taken from the Opensignal study (source: https://www.opensignal.com/)
