Bangladesh Election Act: Not in 50 years, why in 2 weeks?

Muhammad Ali Bukhari, January 25, 2022August 25, 2023

Both 1972 and current Bangladesh Constitution has outlined the forming of Election Commission in a barely written 2-3 pages with 9 articles within 118-126, where 118 (1) says that, “There shall be an Election Commission for Bangladesh…, subject to the provisions of any law made in that behalf, be made by the President.”

That means it is all about President’s appointment. But, now the government after 50 years for a straight 3 terms intends to do so in 2 weeks with its questionable majority in parliament, where only 7 in actual opposition for the debate.

In Canada, alone Elections Act exist both in English and French languages in a detail 538 pages since 2000, containing of 21 parts and 555 sections, and specifically for appointment of the Chief Electoral Officer it says, “There shall be a Chief Electoral Officer who shall be appointed by resolution of the House of Commons to hold office during good behaviour for a term of 10 years. He or she may be removed for cause by the Governor General on address of the Senate and House of Commons.”

A matter of realization and reflect!
