Covid-19 in Ontario, still too many deaths: another 75

Marzio Pelù, February 3, 2022August 25, 2023

TORONTO – There is no sign of stopping the massacre that Covid-19 is waging both in Ontario and in much of the rest of Canada: today the tragic “count” of the total deaths were added by another 75 that bring the total of the province, from start of the pandemic, at 11,651.

However, Ontario health officials also reported a significant drop in the number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus today. In fact, there are currently 2,797 patients, against 2,939 the previous day. Moreover, it is good to remember that only 56% of the total people hospitalized are mainly due to Covid-19, while the remaining 44% were hospitalized for other reasons but tested positive for the virus once “tested” in hospital: therefore, it was in fact totally asymptomatic.

The number of beds occupied in intensive care units is also decreasing: there are currently 541 people compared to 555 yesterday: it is also true, as we have repeated in recent articles, that it is possible that the decline in intensive care is also due to the high number of deaths. In any case, 83% of patients are in intensive care mainly due to Covid-19, while only 17% of cases are there mainly for other reasons, but they also have the virus.

As for the vaccination status of ICU patients, 207 of the people in ICU are fully vaccinated, 179 are not vaccinated and 19 are vaccinated, while the remaining 136 patients have an unknown vaccination status. The Ontario Science Table, however, that it is necessary to take into account the fact that only a small part of the population is not vaccinated and therefore the presence of “no-vaxes” in the intensive is oversized. And the Table remember also that people who have been fully vaccinated with at least two doses are 82.9% less likely to end up in hospital and 91.3% less likely to end up in the ICU than unvaccinated people.

As for the new infections – it being understood that the data is unreliable due to the limitation of access to the tests only to the “at risk” categories – today the province recorded 4,098 of them out of a total of 28,493 tests processed, with a positive rate of 13.2%. Of the new infections, 286 were reported among guests of long-term care facilities and 79 among their staff. And 322 nursing homes are currently facing an outbreak.

Today, 5,901 healings were also recorded, bringing the total, since the beginning of the pandemic, in Ontario, to 992,616 while the total of cases confirmed in the laboratory is 1,043,923.

The active and known cases in Ontario are now 39,656, a sharp drop compared to the 41,534 of the previous day, even if – as mentioned – the figure is far from reality given the impossibility of carrying out a number of tests such as to allow a more realistic monitoring of the pandemic.
