Covid-19: another 11 deaths in Ontario, but positivity drops again

Marzio Pelù, June 8, 2022August 25, 2023

TORONTO – Another 11 victims related to Covid-19, today, in Ontario: the total number of deaths from pandemics in the province rises to 13,304. But the positivity rate still drops: today the Ontario analysis laboratories processed 11,234 tests detecting 1,013 cases, so the positivity rate drops to 6.4% compared to 7.2% yesterday and 8, 3% seven days ago. It is the lowest since last December 15, 2021, when it was at 6%.

Over the past month, indicators of the spread of COVID-19 have declined in most metrics, including data on wastewater signals, test positivity, and hospitalizations. “We know the virus is still out there. That said, it’s a lot different now than it was a month and two months ago. We continue to see the numbers go down: infections, ordinary hospitalizations, ICU admissions, wastewater surveillance”, infectious disease specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch told CP24 this morning.

Ontario, as we said, recorded today 1,013 cases: a number that does not actually represent reality, given that the tests are reserved for the “at risk” categories, but the positivity rate has dropped again, as mentioned. For the first time in several weeks, however, active and non-active cases increase to 8,782 from 8,648 yesterday.

As for hospitalizations, there are now 522 patients with the virus in Ontario hospitals, up from 526 yesterday and above all 200 fewer than a week ago. Of the hospitalized, 114 are in intensive care, just like yesterday and down from 127 a week ago. Only 40% of patients admitted to ordinary wards are hospitalized due to Covid-19, while 60% have been hospitalized for other reasons but after entering the hospital are positive for the virus. In intensive care, the relationship is reversed: 69% of patients are there because of Covid-19, 31% for other reasons but are also positive for the virus.

Vaccination Front: 90% of Ontarians aged five or older received one dose of a vaccine, 87% received two doses, and 52% received three doses.
