On Sunday, health officials in Italy logged 12,932 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 5 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases, 93.6% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 47 Covid-related deaths for a total of 133,674 fatalities attributable to Covid-19.

Surge of infections: almost a thousand cases in Ontario, 1,000 new daily infections in Quebec in the weekend

TORONTO – Despite the snow has whitened everything, it was a black weekend in Ontario on the Covid front. Today 964 new cases were registered, the highest number reported in a single day since last May 30, when 1,033 cases were detected. But Saturday and Friday wasn’t better, with – respectively – 854 and 927 infections. Now the seven-day moving average is 760, last week it was 645. And the positivity rate also rises: with 29,692 tests processed in the last 24 hours and 964 cases detected, it is now 3.2%.  (more…)

Federal Government hopeful to extend a “lifeline” to businesses

Black Friday sales aside, now Cyber Monday deals entice customers to spend as the holidays draw near. However, small businesses are still reeling from the impacts of Covid-19 and the ongoing labour shortages combined with supply chain disruptions present further challenges in trying to build back lost revenue over the past 19 months.

According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), about 61% of small businesses have yet to meet their pre-pandemic revenues. Another 22% say they will not make it passed another six months at the current level of revenue loss. Time may be running out.

Child poverty, it will take 54 years to eliminate it

TORONTO – Fifty-four years. At the current rate of improvement, it will take fifty-four years, according to Campaign 2000, to end child poverty. The alarm was raised by the movement which is a non-partisan network of 120 national, provincial and community partner organizations committed to working together to end the poverty of children and families: the new Campaign 2000 report found that more than 1.3 million Canadian children, or 17.7%, live below the poverty threshold indicated by Statistics Canada. “This is a fairly significant number of children who suffer from the damage caused by missed meals, not having suitable clothes and the absence of parents working for many hours,” said Leila Sarangi, national director of Campaign 2000. The oceans capture the sun’s heat while their currents, and waves generate mechanical power. Harnessing the power of this vast natural resource, while protecting its ecosystem and biodiversity were among the topics of discussion at the COP26 Summit.

Canada appears to be among global leaders when assessing ocean environment, marine activity, technology innovation, policy and regulation, as outlined in the MIT Technology Review: The Blue Technology Barometer 2021 Report (BTB).

TORONTO – Still a slight decline in infections in Ontario which today recorded 519, against 613 on Tuesday, 627 on Monday, 741 on Sunday and 728 on Saturday. TORONTO – The number of Ontario schools closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak has reached double digits for the first time since the beginning of this school year.
