Poilievre announces his bid: the race for leadership has begun (and is over already)

TORONTO – Pierre Poilievre is ready to succeed Erin O’Toole at the helm of the Conservative Party. With his candidacy begins – and probably already ends – the race for the leadership of the Conservatives. It is indeed very difficult to imagine another potential candidate who has any chance of victory against Poilievre, a rising star of the Canadian right, respected by the various Tory souls and feared by the other parties. Forty-two years old, in parliament since 2004 as a representative of the Carleton district – in the Ottawa area – Poilievre has held numerous government positions under the administration of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He currently serves as Shadow Minister of Finance.

Status update of Covid-19 cases worldwide

Here we provide a daily update of the data available for select countries and jurisdictions as of February 6, 2022, at 4:15 pm EST.

On Sunday, health officials in Germany logged 97,935 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 11.0 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases 73.0% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 27 Covid-related deaths for a total of 119,359 fatalities attributable to Covid-19.

Covid-19 in Ontario, intensive care below 500

TORONTO – The number of hospitalizations for (or with) Covid-19 in Ontario is still decreasing: today the hospitalizations in the province were 2,230, the lowest number since last January 5 and in any case in sharp decline compared to the 2,493 on Saturday and to the 2,634 Friday, although the data is not complete because not all hospitals report the data over the weekend.  (more…)
