Toronto-Danforth (formerly Broadview-Greenwood) electoral district is another key riding in the GTA that may impact the outcome of the election. Roughly 15 km east of Davenport, the riding could prove to be a tough competition between the Liberal and NDP parties.
After defeating incumbent NDP Craig Scott in the 2015 election, Julie Dabrusin, the current liberal MP, has represented the riding ever since. In the 2019 election, she won 47.7% of the vote. The NDP candidate, Nin Sook Lee, took 33.2%.
One of the better-known MPs to represent the area was NDP Jack Layton between 2004-2011. Historically, the riding has flipped between the NDP and Liberal party. According to the latest projections by 338Canada.com (August 16), which uses algorithms that take into account results of all major polls, the NDP are ahead of the Liberals by 3.3%.
Their candidate, Clare Hacksel, appears poised to win back the seat from the incumbent party. Michael Carey is the Conservative party candidate. No candidates have been named for the Greens nor the People’s Party of Canada.
With a population of 106,875 residents, the riding is home to a number of culturally diverse ethnic groups including the Chinese and Greek communities. Italians make up 5% of the constituents in the district.
