TORONTO – Hospitalizations due to or with Covid-19 still below a thousand in Ontario: today the number of inpatients went from 809 patients on Sunday to 890, thus remaining well under 1,000 while intensive care remained almost unchanged: 157 against 152 on Sunday. These figures are comforting, given that they also include the holiday Monday (Victoria Day) for which the numbers had not been disclosed.
Furthermore, the percentage of those who actually ended up in hospital due to Covid-19 remains low: 42%. The remaining 58% are hospitalized for other reasons and tested positive to the Covid-test upon entering the hospital. A slightly higher percentage in intensive care, where those hospitalized for Covid are 69% and those with Covid 31%.
As for the vaccination status of infected hospitalized patients, 553 patients in ordinary wards are fully vaccinated, 128 are not vaccinated and 27 are partially vaccinated. In intensive care, however, 49 patients are fully vaccinated, 11 are not vaccinated and 5 are partially vaccinated. For the remainder, the vaccination status is not known.
The number of deaths also remains low: 3 in the last two days (2 on Monday and 1 today), bringing the death toll in the province, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 13,164.
As for the infections, today 1,287 were detected out of a total of 6,534 swabs performed on the “at risk” categories only. The positivity rate therefore rises to 10.5% from 9% on Sunday. The active and known cases in Ontario are now officially 14,347 against 15,439 on Sunday.
The situation also seems to improve in Quebec, where ordinary hospitalizations have slightly increased (1,351, +4) but those in intensive care are decreasing (47, -9) and the number of deaths is also decreasing (3, which bring the total since the beginning of the pandemic in the province to 15,357).
The province also recorded 417 new cases based on tests (9,094) reserved for “at risk” categories only, as well as a further 183 resulting from the 219 do-it-yourself tests entered by citizens in the portal activated by the Quebec government to monitor the situation. There are now 60,786 active and known cases in Quebec. Finally, the number of health workers absent due to Covid-19 still decreases: today they were 4,014.
Let’s see the state of hospitalizations in Canada, province by province, comparing it with that of last May 9 (in brackets). As you will notice, hospitalizations have dropped in all provinces except Prince Edward Island where they have gone from 13 two weeks ago to 22 in the current one. Quebec 1,351 (2,111); Ontario 890 (1,167); Alberta 1,165 (1,267); British Columbia 540 (550); Saskatchewan 284 (390); Manitoba 149 (173); Nova Scotia 43 (66); New Brunswick 35 (81); Prince Edward Island 22 (13); Newfoundland and Labrador 14 (17).
