Ontario, hospitalizations never so down since December

Marzio Pelù, May 15, 2022August 25, 2023

TORONTO – If they weren’t weekend data, when not all hospitals provide Covid numbers, they were very positive: today the number of people being treated for Covid-19 in intensive care in Ontario reached the lowest point since December 10, 2021.

The latest data indicated that there are 1.024 infected people in hospital – 1,451 on Thursday – including 151 in the ICU, compared to 175 on Thursday. But it will be confirmed over the next few days, given that 10% of hospitals do not upload data on the weekend. In any case, making a weekly comparison, overall hospitalizations decreased by 12% compared to the same period last week, while the number of people in intensive care decreased by 27%. Other indicators are also showing steady improvements, starting with wastewater data that continue to spotlight a decline in overall virus activity.

In the last 24 hours, 1,564 new cases of Covid-19 have been registered in Ontario through molecular tests (reserved, however, only for “at risk” categories), compared to 1,934 on the same day last week and 2,243 in the previous week (1 May). Net the decrease in active and known cases that are now, officially (i.e. on the basis of tests reserved for the “at risk” categories), 19,553 against 20,755 in Thursday: therefore, active infections fall below 20 thousand.

However, the number of deaths remains high: another 7 today. Since the start of the pandemic, deaths related to Covid-19 in Ontario have so far been 13,070.
