What if Canada also had its Mario Draghi? A prestigious and authoritative banker, who for years has worked at major international financial institutions, ready to take the big leap in politics? This hypothesis could materialize as early as the next federal elections: a hypothesis that has been circulating in the chambers of power for many months, that Mark Carney may be thinking about running as a candidate with the Liberal Party, is now acquiring more credit.
The new speculations about Carney’s future were kicked off by Catherine McKenna’s announcement about her future: the current Federal Minister of Infrastructure, formerly responsible for the Federal Department of the Environment, has decided not to reapply for the next elections. An unexpected move, which however frees up a square in the Ottawa Center federal district. Another clue is represented by the fact that Carney lives in the capital a few kilometres from this constituency.
In addition to this, Carney himself is a personal friend of the current Minister of Infrastructure. During the press conference in which McKenna announced his intention to leave active politics in the next legislature, his speech slipped precisely on the former governor of Bank of Canada and on the hypothesis of his candidacy in the ranks of the Liberal Party.
