Status update of Covid-19 cases worldwide

Here we provide a daily update of the data available for select countries and jurisdictions as of January 20, 2022, at 6:15 pm EST.

On Thursday, health officials in Poland logged 32,835 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 4.4 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases, 86.5% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 315 Covid-related deaths for a total of 103,378 fatalities attributable to Covid-19.

Record snowfall in Mississauga, city plows leave residents “walled in”

Mississauga residents are still recovering after digging out of the first major snowfall in 2022. During the weekly press conference, Mayor Bonnie Crombie confirmed that many parts of the city experienced an accumulation of 45 cm of snow, the most in a single day since 1944. While residents went straight to work digging out their driveways and walkways, many would have to wait days until city plows dug out their street. (more…)

Ontario: children at school but teachers are absent

TORONTO – The students returned to the classrooms on Wednesday but a large number of teachers remained at home. It is an emergency in the school boards of the GTA that are rushing to hire substitutes to replace absent teachers due to, they say, “the high number of infections or contacts with people infected with Covid-19”.

সুইজারল্যান্ডের আইকিউএয়ার-এর তথ্যের ভিত্তিতে প্রণীত ২০২০ সালের বিশ্ব বায়ুদূষণ প্রতিবেদনে দক্ষিণ ও পূর্ব-এশিয়ার অঞ্চলগুলো সর্বাধিক দূষিত বলে প্রদর্শিত। তাতে বিশ্বের ৫০টি শহরের মাঝে বাংলাদেশ, চীন, ভারত ও পাকিস্তানেরই ৪৯টি শহর অন্তর্ভুক্ত, ঢাকা শহর সেখানে দ্বিতীয়; যদিও বৈশ্বিকভাবে জলবায়ুর তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধিতে বনে অগ্নিকান্ড ও ধূলিঝড় ও চাষাবাদ রীতি বহুলাংশে সংশ্লিষ্ট।

Bangladesh among most polluted countries in the world

Relying on Swiss IQAir’s information platform, the 2020 World Air Quality Report shows, South and East Asian locations emerge as the most polluted globally. Among them Bangladesh, China, India, and Pakistan share 49 of the 50 of the most polluted cities worldwide, Dhaka as second worst ranking, while wildfires and dust storms linked to increasing global temperatures as part of climate change as well as agricultural practices.

Ontario’s reopening plan: restaurants, gyms, cinemas at 50% capacity on January 31

TORONTO – “The worst is behind us”. Word of Doug Ford. With this ‘motto’, Ontario’s premier today announced the reopening plan: first step on January 31, when restaurants, gyms, cinemas and other indoor environments will be able to reopen with 50% capacity, as part of a broader plan to gradually lift most of the Covid-19 restrictions by mid-March.  (more…)
