Status update of Covid-19 cases worldwide

Here we provide a daily update of the data available for select countries and jurisdictions as of January 26, 2022, at 4:00 pm EST.

On Wednesday, health officials in Spain logged 133,553 new infections, pushing the total number of confirmed positive cases passed 9.5 million. Of the cumulative total number of cases, 60.2% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, authorities have reported 215 Covid-related deaths for a total of 92,591 fatalities attributable to Covid-19.

Covid-19, new Omicron sub-variant BA.2 arrives in Canada

TORONTO – While there are signs that the wave of the Covid-19 strain Omicron has peaked in some parts of the world, including Canada, scientists’ attention is now focused on the sub-variant of Omicron BA.2 that is spreading rapidly to at least 47 countries. Infections due to this SUB-variant BA.2, designated “variant under investigation” by the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA), are increasing not only in Canada but also in India, the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Sweden, Australia and Singapore.

TECT threatens strike in labour dispute with TCDSB

Things may get a little more difficult for some Toronto area students this coming Monday. The Toronto Catholic Elementary Teachers Union (TECT) is prepared to commence strike action as early as next week. If TECT and the Toronto Catholic District School (TCDSB) fail to come to an agreement in the next few days, teachers are in a position to stop instruction services as of January 31, 2022.
