Covid-19: in Ontario hospitalizations return to rise, 56 dead in Quebec

Marzio Pelù, February 15, 2022August 25, 2023

TORONTO – The hospitalization curve bends upwards again: today in Ontario hospitals there were 1,550 people with Covid-19, up from 1,369 on Monday. On the other hand, admissions in intensive care decreased, albeit slightly: today 384, yesterday 394, Sunday 402. There are more deaths, compared to Monday (8): today, 19, which bring the total number of victims in Ontario, from the beginning of the pandemic, to 12,120.

As for the new cases – even if data is unreliable due to the scarcity of tests carried out – today 1,593 were recorded in Ontario based on the 12,961 tests processed in the last 24 hours: the positive rate of the province is now 11.9% . Of today’s infections, 223 were reported in Toronto, 129 in the Peel region, 63 in the York region, 56 in the Durham region, 39 in the Halton region, 159 in Ottawa, 136 in Simcoe-Muskoka. All other areas reported fewer than 100 new cases.

2,730 healings today, bringing the number of patients healed in Ontario, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 1,038,944, while the total number of laboratory confirmed cases is 1,076,078. The cases still active (and known) in Ontario are now 25,014.

In Quebec hospitalizations continue to decrease, but the number of deaths returns to record a worrying surge: 56, which bring the total of the province, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 13,766. Admissions, on the other hand, dropped to 2,052, 43 less compared to yesterday, after 135 people were hospitalized and 178 people were discharged. Intensive care wards also recorded a small decline (four fewer patients), for a total of 132 currently.

As for the new infections – bearing in mind that the tests, as in Ontario, are limited to the “at risk” categories – today 1,973 were detected: the positivity rate increased slightly, rising to 9.5%. There are now 26,511 active and known cases in Quebec. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 902,246 infections have been recorded and 861.96 healings.

The situation is still worrying in Alberta, where the “count” of the dead were added another 35 over the weekend, including two people of about thirty years of age. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,776 people have died in Alberta. The count of patients admitted to hospital with Covid-19 shows signs of gradual decline, but the number is still high: 1,528. The daily average – calculated over seven days – of patients in Alberta hospitals has gradually decreased, but remains above 1,600, as has been the case for two weeks. There are 124 patients in intensive care, with a decrease of five units in the last seven days. Since the start of the pandemic, 516,812 infections have been recorded in Alberta and 492,171 people have recovered. There are currently 20,865 active and known cases.
