Covid-19: Ontario exceeds 1,500 cases in 24 hours, Quebec over 1,600

TORONTO – Other 1,536 new infections recorded today in Ontario against 1,476 on Sunday and 887 on last Monday. With 38,221 tests processed in the last 24 hours, Ontario therefore achieves a positive rate of 5.5%, up significantly from 3.5% a week ago. The seven-day moving average of new infections has now met 1,328, up from 940 on Monday. 

Of the new ones confirmed today, 601 concern those who are not vaccinated, 33 concern partially immunized people, 809 are those with at least two doses and 93 concern people with an unknown vaccination status.

Today’s largest public health units include Toronto (255), Kingston, York Region (139), Ottawa (Peel Region (89), Windsor (82), Halton Region (75), and Simcoe Muskoka (73). The number of active and known cases in Ontario now stands at 11,538, up from 8,439 seven days ago.

There is a slight decline in hospitalizations in intensive care related to the virus which are now 161, down from 168 last Monday. In total, 253 people are hospitalized in Ontario hospitals for Covid-19.

One death recorded, bringing the death toll in Ontario since the start of the pandemic to 10,079.

Currently, 90.3 percent of Ontarians over the age of 12 have received a dose of the vaccine, and 87.6 percent have received due. Data on child vaccinations in Ontario have not yet been disclosed.

Quebec travels hand in hand with Ontario: today the province recorded 1,628 cases out of 34,408 recorded analyzed. Of the new infections, 822 involve fully vaccinated people, 29 with a single dose received more than two weeks ago and 777 not vaccinated or with a dose received less than two weeks ago. 14,251 active and known cases in Quebec.

Three more people died from the disease, for a total of 11,611.

Hospitalizations in the province increased by 6 after another 30 patients were admitted to Quebec hospitals and 24 were discharged. The total number of people in hospital is now 268, including 73 in intensive care units, an increase of 5. Of the 30 new patients, 19 had received the vaccine doses and 11 were not vaccinated or had received a dose less than two weeks ago.

In Quebec, 88% of residents aged 5 and over (data on children’s vaccinations are already available here) received a dose of the vaccine and 81% received due.
