Mandatory vaccines at the TDSB, the catholic school board is silent

Mariella Policheni, August 26, 2021August 25, 2023

TORONTO – Toronto’s public school superintendent tightens up Covid-19 vaccination rules. The Catholic one, on the other hand, at the moment makes a silent scene while the first day of school is approaching by giant strides. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) voted unanimously to introduce vaccination duty for staff, trustees and visitors. To make the announcement yesterday was the school board: “the school trustees during the meeting Wednesday evening decided to make the anti-Covid-19 vaccination mandatory”. And considering that there are only eleven days left before the reopening of schools and that the TDSB intends to implement the procedure before the children return to class, there is no time to lose.
All will have to be fully immunized and will have to reveal and provide proof of the vaccination that has taken place. “The staff of the school board has the task now to develop this procedure and the key word is ‘mandatory’ – said the spokesperson of the TDSB Ryan Bird – the imposition concerns not only the staff but also the school trustees and visitors who will be required not only to reveal and provide proof of vaccination, but also to upload on the site the certificate that is issued after the second dose “.

What is not yet clear is what will happen to people who refuse to immunize themselves, but Bird said the staff “will establish those details in the plan that is currently being worked on.” “We have just received this directive from the trustees and the procedure to be put in place must be elaborated – said Bird – there are legal implications, there are implications for the staff, there are a series of implications that are under consideration by the staff”.

But there are many knots to untie. The spokesman for Canada’s largest public school board said that the TDSB is working to assess what information on the vaccination status of its employees can be public about it and the role that Covid-19 tests play in the plan “.

But visitors will also have to comply with the new rules, including parents who want access to school buildings. Last year, due to the pandemic, parents absolutely could not enter schools. “The data are clear: being fully vaccinated significantly reduces the most serious risks of Covid-19 – said TDSB President Alexander Brown – this is an important step to ensure that our schools and workplaces are as safe as possible for staff and students, especially younger ones who cannot receive the vaccine”.

The consequences that originate from the mandatory nature of the vaccine are obviously many, some will not fail to spark controversy: the public school board, however, has decided to act to counter the dangerous fourth wave of the virus. We regret not being able to say the same thing about the Catholic one.
