Covid-19: another 56 dead in Ontario, but hospitalizations are still dropping

Marzio Pelù, January 23, 2022August 25, 2023

TORONTO – The total number of hospitalizations for Covid-19 in Ontario falls, but the number of victims remains high: today 56 were registered (a boy under the age of 19 also died during the weekend in Toronto), bringing the total deaths in Ontario, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 10,968. On the other hand, hospitalizations drop – we said – to 3,797, compared to 4,026 on Saturday, even if it should be remembered that not all hospitals provide the data on weekends. There was a slight increase in the number of beds occupied in intensive care, from 600 on Saturday to 604 today.

As for the vaccination status of the hospitalized, 2,079 patients in the ordinary wards are fully vaccinated, 783 are not vaccinated and 194 are partially vaccinated (no information has been provided on the remaining 741 patients), while of those in intensive care 227 are fully vaccinated, 216 they are not vaccinated and 17 are partially vaccinated (no information on the remaining 144 ICU patients).

Ontario also recorded, today, 5,833 new cases of Covid: the case counts are underestimated due to the limitation of access to the tests to the “at risk” categories only, but it is nevertheless significant to highlight the positivity rate calculated on the basis of swabs performed: with 32,247 tests, the positivity rate is 18.2%.

Most of today’s cases were detected in Toronto (1,022), the Peel region (884) and the York region (467). Other areas with relatively high case numbers include Hamilton (351), Ottawa (307), Halton Region (270), and Middlesex-London (245). The active and known cases are now 67,674 across Ontario.

On the vaccine front, 91.6% of Ontarians over the age of 12 received at least one dose and 88.9% received two.

Admissions also drop in Quebec: in one day, 12 fewer patients in ord inari (now 3,283) and 2 fewer in intensive care (273). The province also recorded another 33 deaths, bringing Quebec’s total since the start of the pandemic to 12,799.

The daily number of deaths has therefore dropped – at least today – drastically, compared to that of the past few days which has often touched 100. Instead, 5,141 new infections out of 34,971 samples analyzed, for a positive rate of 10.5%. There are now 61,616 active and known cases in Quebec.

The trend therefore seems to be that – now underway for a few days – of a decrease in hospitalizations, the current status of which in Canada is as follows: Ontario 3,797, Quebec 3,283, Alberta 1,191, British Columbia 924, Manitobas 586, Saskatchewan 244, New Brunswick 125, Nova Scotia 82, Newfoundland and Labrador 18, Prince Edward Island 8.
